Re: Nice Planet 6: Get Me Off This Planet.

Who on Earth thinks politically appointed government bureaucrats should be involved in any way with gathering and reporting news?

Probably politicians who think they never should be criticized!

Oh, I get it, that was a rhetorical question.

Seriously, though, there do seem to be some people in the current administration who seem to be okay with these "but it's all for the greater good" argument. Like good intentions always give you a free pass for bad behavior. :(

I don't think criticism is the principal concern here. Rather it's alleged lack of coverage for topics the busy bodies think are important. It's Fairness Doctrine 2.0, only much worse. It's ironic, is it not, that we have more diversity of opinion in our media (and more media) than ever before? This baby needs to be strangled in the crib.

agree with your last sentence entirely. However, it seems clear that censorhip of some sort is the ultimate goal behind these proposals, no matter how they try to dress them up. :(

Nowdays, it seems, just about everybody has a web site or blog. We've never had such free flow of information. Yet, some members of the FCC think it's a good idea to gather data on the process by which news operations decide what to cover. Speaking as someone who has presided at uncounted morning budget meetings, the process can be simple or complicated, obvious or subtle. In the news business there are "A" stories and "B" stories. "A" stories require all hands on deck, frequently wall to wall "The Hindenburg slams into city hall." "B" stories are by far the more common. And the depth of coverage is variable. In fact, what might have been a lead story yesterday might not be covered at all today, for instance if a jetliner belly flops in to the local airport. The answer to the question "why did you cover a given story in a given way" is because, in our professional judgment, it was warranted.

Meanwhile, the Commission is backing down.

And it's up to each of us (and not some government official) to sort out the wheat from the chaff.

In the beginning, the rationale for having an FCC was that channels (first AM, then FM, then TV) were "scarce natural resources." Not so much these days.
