Re: Nice Planet 6: Get Me Off This Planet.
That's probably true for some of 'em. But for others, who believe in intergenerational, international "Satanist" conspiracies of the type portrayed in Rosemary's Baby, the absence of evidence is proof. I recall a Geraldo segment where he interviewed a McMartin "survivor." Handsome socal kid, about 17, who sincerely told stories of his sexual abuse at McMartin. Later, Village Voice did a wonderful piece on the phenomenon and mentioned that this kid was never called to testify. Why? Because he also "remembered" flights in black airplanes, ritual murders of children, blood soaked ceremonies and the rest of the catalogue of hysterical nonsense. Prosecutors didn't want him on the stand retelling his stories of being sexually abused in a church and the rest of the incredible horrors. Village Voice pointed out that as these cases developed, the stories told by the "victims" inevitably became more bizarre and less believable. But elected prosecutors believed. As did numbskull "journalists," and ignorant citizens. Nobody wanted to be seen as being "soft" on child sexual abuse, no matter how ridiculous the charges were. Salem all over again.
Dorothy Rabinowitz of the WSJ earned a Pulitzer for her writing on some of these cases: Fells Acres and Wenatchee, WA. But the true believers still believe.
