Re: Nice Planet 2012

Well, evidently he was clocked. But may have taken advantage of the situation by adding some details. "Stapling his mouth shut" is certainly colorful, if not true. If this kid made the anti-Semitic part of it up, he joins a long line of folks who have prevaricated about these kinds of incidents. Just a few days ago a Nebraska lesbian's claims of having been beaten up by a "gang" of hets was exposed as a lie. The queen mother of this nonsense, of course, is Tawana Brawley, who claimed to have been gang raped. And one of her rapists, by an odd co-incidence, just happened to be an assistant DA.

Re: Nice Planet 2012

Two witnesses connected with the assault in the 500 block of Spartan Avenue told the East Lansing Police Department they helped journalism sophomore Zachary Tennen after he was attacked and could not say whether staples were used.

See, there is the issue. You expect an accurate report from someone majoring in journalism these days? His profs would throw him out of class if he didn't sensationalize it! ;)

I know what you mean. But to be fair, I was tipped to that article by an MSU journalism prof. And he's so liberal he makes Barney Frank look like a right-wing reactionary.

But let's not let education enter into the equation here.

Reminds me of interactions with kids who do something stupid/wrong and I look to the parent for some correction of the little criminal. "But Little Johnny doesn't know any better." When they can do nothing but look at me like an idiot when I look at them like they're an idiot, I am forced to point out, "Well, here's your chance to teach him so he does know better next time." Followed by a <<whoosh>> as it goes right over their head.

Yeah. I can tell you the response of my parents. Something along the lines of "you can bet your a*s he'll never do that again." I've posted the story about how in grammar school my mother used to invite my home room teacher over for lunch once or twice a year. Apart from being an event I dreaded, it was my mother's way of making sure I understood that the adults were in this together. And my protests that "she doesn't like kids" or some such rot, weren't going anywhere. An unanticpated benefit (at least to me) was getting to know the teachers outside the classroom. And they turned out to be good people. Imagine.

A corollary, in the case of more serious misbehavior is: "He's hanging around with the wrong crowd." Sure. But unless the "wrong crowd" kidnapped him in the middle of the night like British press gangs, how does that make the little punk less responsible for his own acts? He volunteered, didn't he?

Here you go. This is beyond absurd.

If the school district considers the kid signing his name "using a gun", how the hell is a history teacher supposed to talk about any war/conflict after 1200 or so, whenever the west started using gunpowder on a grand scale? Those people sure as hell used guns more so than this kid....

Had I started kindergarten in 2012 instead of in 1989, I wouldn't have made it through school. I liked to walk around pretending I was a video game character and air-shooting at people.

You just sneaked in. By 1993 my first grade teacher had a "no finger guns" policy in her classroom.

No crap.... It's really getting to the point where when I read stories like this I have "When I was a kid....." type of moments... It's really starting to sink in how much society has changed in the last 10-15 years of my 28 year existence... I can't even begin to imagine how I would react as a parent if my kid was roped up in an asinine school predicament like this one.... And given that I'm not planning on having kids anytime soon, I can only imagine how much more change is going to occur.... It's quite scary and perplexing

Rulers across the knuckles, having to hold encyclopedias at arms' length (one in each hand) outward, only short sleeves with windows open when it's 10 degrees out, etc.

Yep, Catholic school.

This should be of interest to you Old Pio (Article on Rhamaland):

I think that about covers it. However, the million bucks given to street thugs is an honored Chicago tradition. As I posted recently, LBJ's War on Poverty gave just about that much to the Blackstone Rangers. Their leadership used the money to pay themselves handsome salaries and to purchase heavy military weapons which they stored in the basement of the church that was fronting for them. Don't cross these guys, ever.

Naturally it's worse when the money comes from the city. You could at least make the theoretical case that federal bureaucrats, with Ivy League educations, really weren't up to speed on Chicago street gangs. Can't say that about local political potentates divvying up the swag.

Remember in the Chick-fil-a dustup, regardless of where you stand on the CEO's policy, an alderman declared his opposition to the opening of a restaurant in his ward and because "that's the way things have always been done," it's almost certain the alderman would have gotten his way. This is a "courtesy" they extend to one another.
