Your initial point wasn't "wrong," just not the way things work in a free society with a free press. For which I'm sure we're both grateful. If I was emperor of the United States, I'd have him zotzed at half time of a Super Bowl.

And if Etan Patz' parents or siblings wanted to initiate the death sequence by pushing a button or pulling a switch, that would also work for me.

I don't know if Colorado is unusual in this, but in Colorado, if you get drunk, get behind the wheel, and kill someone, your best bet is to drive away. If someone takes down a license plate number, and you get busted, you will get less jail time than if you had stayed at the scene and taken responsibility because they won't be able to prove that you were driving drunk. Good times.

Yeah, I do think it would be a bit hard for a D-1A school to put him on a roster, especially if he took any college classes while in jail. However, a D1-AA or a D2 school would be a lot easier for him to get to play somewhere.

The story doesn't indicate whether this clown is a state district court judge or not. If he is, he was elected, on a partisan ballot. In the 80's a Dallas district court judge went easy on a guy who'd killed several dudes he thought were gay. At sentencing, the judge observed that what he'd done wasn't all that bad and the victims probably deserved it, or something. Eventually he was voted out of office. I'm taking the long way 'round to suggesting the idiot judge in the case at hand may have been posturing for the voters.

I was reminded of that old joke about the difference between involvement and commitment being like ham and eggs: the chicken is involved, the pig is committed. This guy is committed.
