That Haberny guy, who I think describes himself as a performance artist, has written a lot of these rejection letters. I saw a website once that contained some of them, but on a quick search I couldn't locate it. Just this one, which is also funny.

I had a GF who did this kind of art, so I met plenty of people in The Biz. It's just like Modern Classical music: a hundred people all just performing for each other, while to those of us on the outside it looks (sounds) like sh-t.

I understand tastes that need to be acquired -- punk certainly does, and a lot of (well, good) hip hop does. And there is writing that is opaque but wonderful, like Joyce. And most good poetry doesn't rhyme.

In short, it's really hard to make me offended by elitism, because all too often "elitist" is a word used by stupid people to attack smart people they are not capable of understanding. But these folks do offend me by their elitism -- maybe because I just don't accept that the obscurity of their work necessarily means profundity. Both modern art and music worship ugliness as the mark of seriousness. Robert Hughes, who is MUCH more sympathetic to modern art than I, did a much better job explaining this in The Shock of the New. Sometimes a bunch a crap on a canvas is just a bunch of crap on a canvas, it isn't important or doing anything important.

I don't know if flaggy ever experienced a midway as a kid, but if he did, the carnies must have cleaned him out in minutes.
