Nice Planet 13: This Planet Sucks

Re: Nice Planet 13: This Planet Sucks

Those aren't federal officers, they're airport cops. They rank somewhere between "Mall Cop" and "Mayberry PD" on the scale. Getting to jack around an "unruly" passenger was likely their highlight of the year.

Weren't they all federalized with the TSA? Based upon Chicago PD, they're federal employees, at the very least.

On Monday, Chicago Police confirmed they were not involved in the incident and that the officers and security personnel seen in the now viral videos are with the Department of Aviation, a division of the U.S. Department of Transportation.

...

"He told the police and the United employees he had to be at the hospital in the morning to see patients," Bridges further explained.

Before the flight departed, Bridges said passengers had been told at the gate that the airline was offering $400 and a hotel stay for any volunteer who would take a flight at 3 p.m. the next day. After passengers boarded, however, a crewmember alerted fliers that people would have to give up their seats to United employees who needed to be in Kentucky for work, Bridges told the Courier-Journal.

Even though United upped the offer $800, and the airline announced that the flight wouldn't depart until the crewmembers were situated, no one budged.

It would be perfect if the mall cop was black.

Yes they needed some crew to be in place.
Random passengers no way. They would never select a full fare or premium passenger to boot.
Delta once offered to take someone off the plane for me because they screwed up- I was diamond and had first at standby but the gate agent was new and forgot me. I was appalled at taking someone off, and they put me in first class on the next flight.

Then United should have taken it in the pants with cancellations if they couldn't have a crew in place because of absolute crap planning.

**** United and their strong-arm bull****. If they don't overbook, then charge the dickwads who don't have a valid reason rather than screw over people who pay for their fare and are on the flight.

Oh I agree, was just stating why they wanted to get four people off. I have a family member high up in delta ops so I fully understand how these things work.
Execution was the issue here. Total colossal failure. Only worse thing would have been if the officer would have grabbed a woman by the *****

Re: Nice Planet 13: This Planet Sucks

United is not the only airline to overbook. They all do it. That being said, United really screwed the pooch on this one.

Sorry. I just get fired up sometimes.

I believe United stock was down 200M at the opening today.

I almost bought when I heard that. But then again, United doesn't seem to understand how to handle a problem given their CEO's responses to the last two incidents.

This might be a lesson in that it's cheaper to charter a G5 or G6 to Tu four people than beat a paying customer and drag him or her off a plane. Why didn't they do that in the first place? What's a private one way charter cost today? $5k-$10k? Almost cheaper than paying out $3,200, paying for hotels, flying them on another flight, and ****ing off a customer.

Here is what I didn't understand about the whole incident. United controls the plane. Why just drag the guy off. Just don't take off.

If I were a betting man, I'd bet that somewhere in the documents, ticket, boarding pass, etc..., is language that gives United the absolute right to demand you give up your seat. They'll owe you compensation for it, but I'm pretty sure they can overbook, then insist that someone leave.

If I were United, I would have offered people compensation if they wanted to voluntarily give up their seat, as United did (I might have tried a little more than the $800 reportedly offered. Everyone has a price). If you still don't get four takers, then do the random drawing. If those drawn don't leave, just announce the plane is not departing until that passenger departs. Announce you're deboarding the plane.

That's how I would have done it.

Re: Nice Planet 13: This Planet Sucks

That wouldnt work because now you dont just have 4 ticked off passengers you have an entire plane. And they wont be mad at the 4 who wont get off (since they didnt want to either) they will be mad at United who is acting like those dumb teachers the punish the entire class because one kid acts up. This isnt the military, stuff like that almost always backfires. So now you are going to be giving refunds to an entire plane OR risk the same bad PR (minus of course the video of the guy being dragged off) with now hundreds of stories about how United screwed them over for no reason.

I've been on planes where everyone has been asked to deboard after we were all on. No one was happy about it, but I guarantee you didn't see a youtube video of it either.

So have I...and they were plenty ticked off.

There is no solution to this where United doesnt look like the complete d-bags they are. They shot themselves in the foot then shoved the foot straight in their mouths.
