Niagara drops women's hockey!!

Re: Niagara drops women's hockey!!

I said nothing about schools charging more tuition because they have football, or any other particular sport. In fact some schools without football or with non-scholarship football (DIII) have much higher tuition than schools with DI football. All I said was that high profile sports can be used (either purposely or as an effect of having them) as a way to increase enrollment and therefore more tuition to the school from having more students.

Most schools don't simply take everyone that applies. They have an enrollment cap. If they are going to collect more in tuition, it has to be by charging higher tuition. This also points out that getting more students isn't necessarily something that they desire. Where it might come into play is when getting a school off the ground, either initially or after some major change. The administration at USC long claimed that adding a successful football team in the 1920s boosted its profile in attracting students. The same with Michigan State after it joined the Big 10. However, this is a rather limited circumstance that doesn't apply for most schools.

And there are schools and other institutions as well as sport feasibility companies that measure the complex money generating factors associated with college athletics.

There are. However:

a) they don't make their direct findings and, particularly, their methodology public so it's hard to use them to provide convincing evidence; and
b) the world is full of consultancies that are prone to telling their customers what they want to hear. The world is also full of clients who really want something with which they can wage a PR battle in favor of something they've already decided rather than to help make a decision.

Absent getting a look at the methodology, I take these at less than face value.

It's pretty simple when you think, I'm sure you and many others on here have some friends from high school that went to a particular school because they were fans of that school's high profile sports, such as football and basketball.

Actually, I didn't. Perhaps that's because I didn't have many friends in high school and perhaps because those I had were mostly the children of professors. Either way, I remain skeptical that this makes a significant difference.

Re: Niagara drops women's hockey!!

Any updates as to where the players have landed?

There are 20 returning players and 2 recruits. That's alot of players lookingto find spots. We have heard rumours of 2 to Mercyhurst and one to RMU. Other than that is there any other news?

Unofficial.... a fr forward to St Lawrence, soph forward to U of New Hampshire, and a fr D to RMU (making that two players to RMU)

Re: Niagara drops women's hockey!!

Jenna Hendrikx and Kelsey Welch will be playing their last season at Mercyhurst. Another play who will be a Junior next season is still deciding but has it narrowed down to 4 teams.

Re: Niagara drops women's hockey!!

I know there are attempts to reinstate the program and there is a possibility these could prevail. Once players start to find homes however, it becomes a less likely scenario and I hope it's not too early to start inquiring about what these players moves mean to their new teams. I have only seen this particular roster play a few games. Would anyone care to shed a little light on the players that have announced transfers or are in discussions and what their particular games are like? These transfers will have at least one college season under them so unlike new recruits it may be a little easier to characterize the strengths in their games and how those might translate to their new team. (ex. Welch/Hendrikx to Mercyhurst). thx

Re: Niagara drops women's hockey!!

Re: Niagara drops women's hockey!!

Now this is priceless ... the equipment and jerseys that was immediately taken from the player's lockers after the AD's announcement? Niagara is now trying to sell it back to the players. Can't even let them have their game jerseys for a keepsake. Really classy. The school and AD keep looking better and better. Lol!

I really wish there were enough of us to make a statement of some sort. It's embarrassing that they continue to conducts themselves this way and get away with it. Do they plan on auctioning off the NCAA trophy and banners?

Re: Niagara drops women's hockey!!

The whole situation with dropping the program is sad and sickens me....but you can't be surprised by this. The University purchased the equipment at a significant expense. Would it have been a nice gesture to give the equipment out to the players? Sure it would have been...but Universities are a business and not a charity and you can't be surprised that they would try to recoup some of their losses. To them...in the big picture getting some of that money back is more important than worrying about ticking off a few hockey fans.

Sad but true unfortunately.

Re: Niagara drops women's hockey!!

Letting student-athletes keep their equipment (that universities purchase) may fall under "special benefits" and therefore illegal. I know it happens everywhere and all the time, but when the AD can get $100 per kid for a pair of gloves and helmet? Might as well if $ is that important to them.
