This is the first time I've seen it described like this. At what point do you not need permission? What if you fire a guy with two years left on his deal?
I believe that regardless of what news reports, coaches tend to be "relieved of coaching duties" but the contract remains in effect (the paychecks continue) for the duration of the contract. Unless the contract has a buyout option or a buyout is negotiated the coach remains employed by the team to do just about nothing. This way if (when) they get a new job it reduces what the original team had to pay.
