Re: NHL Playoffs 2013: Shut up, Pierre...

Mark Joanette, Eric Furlatt, Wes McCauley, Dan O'Halloran, Dan O'Rourke, Chris Rooney, Brad Watson, and yes, Steve Walkom will be the officials for the Conference Finals per ESPN

This is outrageous. No Andy Van Hellemond, no Dan Marouell, no Mark Faucette. I may refuse to watch the series.

Re: NHL Playoffs 2013: Shut up, Pierre...

There are plenty of true blue Hawks fans (like me) who deserve this success after the teams of the 80s & 90s broke our hearts so many times and then ownership ripped out our hearts and showed them to us during the dark decade.

I'm happy for the guys I grew up with and went to games with who lived and (mostly) died with me over the years following this team.

I'm going to save this with the hope of using it a year from now for my Leafs. :D

A model that takes a 50/50 and chooses the team with a higher standing? This isn't the next coming of the black Shoels formula or anything.

Re: NHL Playoffs 2013: Shut up, Pierre...

Thanks Scarlet. That's an absolutely fascinating article. There were several times I said "Yeah, but ..." only to find that that he addressed my objection in the next paragraph.

Canadian hockey fans will be pleased to know that it's expansion to (and insistence on maintaining teams in) non-traditional markets that is the reason that no Canadian team has won the SC since 1993. In other words, it's Gary Bettman's fault.;)

Re: NHL Playoffs 2013: Shut up, Pierre...

Simple answer? None of the Canadian markets are patient enough to sit through several ****ty seasons in a row while they stock up young talent, unlike every single team left in the playoffs this year.

Yet this was in the article"

Finally, and related to the excess demand for hockey in Canada, Canadian teams routinely sell out their arenas at high ticket prices — whether or not they are any good. This may reduce their incentive to compete.

I'm not sure I agree with that, but what do I know. :)

Re: NHL Playoffs 2013: Shut up, Pierre...

After the titanic series against Detroit, that felt like a regular season game in January.

I assume that L.A. will bring it harder tomorrow.

Re: NHL Playoffs 2013: Shut up, Pierre...

The nearly impossible has happened in only three or four minutes of the first game of the ECF: Pierre McGuire has turned into an even bigger, more odiferous, steaming pile than he was in either of the first two rounds of the playoffs.
