To say the NHL was looking for a reason for this to crap out is an understatement. I think everyone is assuming it will work out, but I dunno. the owners and GMs are not the players, who all desperately want to be there.

It felt surreal this week, in a meeting and hearing about the things the IIHF hasn't determined yet for the WJ, and realizing how much of a disaster Milano is at this point. To say I'm nervous about piloting their new system is an understatement.

If the NHL does end up opting out of the Olympics, then what? They already scheduled the break into the season, there aren't any games to make up like with Beijing. Impromptu All Star weekend? I would assume most arenas have already filled dates with other events. Or is it just a two week vacation for the league?

I'd have to imagine they'd keep it in Europe even if that ends up being in Prague or some other venue of similar size.
All European leagues are on a break as well so they have some options.

I can't see them moving it. i think they'd rather force each nation to submit a team of non-NHLers. but Torino or Lugano are close.

That is correct. NHL width, but IIHF length. Meters to feet conversion makes IIHF slightly shorter than NHL rinks.

So, its a throwback to the 2000s when half the college and AHL rinks didnt meet NHL sizing?

Shrinking the ice surface just speeds the game up. The IIHF / International size (200x100) is almost an extra 3000 square feet of ice over the NHL (200x85).

There were two NMU alums who played for the UHL Rockford Icehogs atound 2004 or 2005. The NMU ice surface was international sized (200x100) and the two kids played most their career on that surface. The Rockford Icehogs rink was much smaller than NHL sized, being just 183x85. It was a difference of 4,445 square feet, or the size of a whole McMansion.

There was an interview with the Icehogs coach where he was impressed with the two Wildcats speed on the UHL ice. He praised them for always out hustling the other players.

I talked with one of them after the season ended, he said he was so happy to play on that smaller ice because he didn't have to put in half the effort anymore.
