Speaking of rankings, despite being suspended, the IIHF still gave points to Russia and Belarus, and gave them points based on their current ranking. So Russia was given points for third place and Belarus in 14th. There's a good chance both teams actually benefited by getting kicked out of the tournament.

As much as I hate the Rangers, the deal with the devil that they made allowed them to win the Cup in '94, but they have to wait another 54 years to win it again. I'm not sure how the strike year impacted that deal, but I would imagine the contract spells it out.

That's not their problem, they're too young and from a stupid place. You only get grandfathered in being from a stupid place if you're old (LA).

The Devils fail because they are a stolen franchise without Calgary's excuse of rescuing a franchise from a stupid place. The Devils also fail because their sweaters and colors are terrible.

The Kansas City Scouts would have made it. I do not know if the Colorado Rockies make it -- I don't think so but I could be convinced. Denver is not a stupid place. Kansas City was, like St. Louis and Hartford, bizarre but kind of adorable and not objectionable.

I'm fine with the Rangers winning. I have never cared about the Isles-Rangers rivalry except that it makes the games more interesting because the fans are lunatics about it. I personally actually like the Rangers a little.

I have explained Calgary.

The Isles cannot be sacrificed because they are MINE. On almost anyone else's comparable list I would expect them to be, if not doomed, at least highly suspect.

The real problem is Washington. On the one hand Washington is a stupid place (take it from me). And the Caps are after the Isles so they would be safe to cut. BUT. My youthful awareness of the NHL includes the Caps. They stay, although they are shakey.

The list is actually logically consistent.

We all have our imperfections. ; ) I believe you've posted before about not really getting into rivalries in general. As a non-native Islanders fan, it baffles me that a native fan would not care. Is it a provincial thing?

No, I think it's because I got off the Island as soon as I fucking could and I never once looked back and I'd be fine if we towed it out beyond Target Rock and sunk it with all hands (sorry, Mom).

My impression from Mets fans' talking about the Yankees rivalry is they care because the Yankee fans in their face are braying loudmouthed trash. Faced with that every day for 40 years you probably want to run their fingers through the shredder and beating their team is your therapy.

I know a few Mets fans who don't mind the Yankees, and a few (fewer) Isles fans who don't mind or even like the Rangers, but we are in a fractional minority. NYC breeds its rivals to kill like anywhere else.

I'm not sure if either team was in a great position to make it. The Scouts had an enormous ownership group, but no one with assets to hold on during troubled times.

The Rockies had a terrible revenue deal with their arena, but league support to stay in Denver. Their ownership history is a wild ride. First owner sold to someone who was building the arena in the Meadowlands, but that guy ended up selling a couple years later to someone who was going to keep the team in Denver. Then a group from Ottawa tried to buy the team and move them there, which would've been a decade before the Senators came to fruition, but that deal fell through. Then the owner of the Astros ended up buying them and moved them to New Jersey after all.

Even when I fall in love with a non-Minnesota team, who will always break my heart, I get destroyed.

None of the Final 4 interests me in the slightest. I don't care who wins. It's like the year the Blues won. The last team on Earth I wanted to ever win a Cup was St. Louis.
