NHL 2017.1: We turn over a new Leaf and still find a Penguin

Re: NHL 2017.1: We turn over a new Leaf and still find a Penguin

8 divisions of 4.
Playoffs:
Eliminator round: 3 at 2 for 1 game. Winner plays #1 in a 4/7 in the Round of 16.

QF and beyond: Most points v least points etc.

Ew.

Two conferences of two 8-team divisions each. Within each conference, seed the division winners 1-2 and give them a first round bye. Take the next 4 teams by record (ignore divisions) and seed them 3 through 6. Reseed the two survivors as 3-4. Proceed normally.

12 teams of 32 make the playoffs. Once we get rid of overtime and the shootout and go back to simple 2-point games the playoff cutoff will be at about a .525 winning percentage. No crap teams in the playoffs anymore.

Re: NHL 2017.1: We turn over a new Leaf and still find a Penguin

False. The Wild still would have made it last season.

They were 49-33 .598. Not bad at all.

Of course, with 32 teams the obvious thing to do is eliminate all conference and divisions, go to a 62-game RS, play everybody home and away like the EPL, and seed em 1 through 32. Heck, doing it that way I'd be fine having all 32 teams qualify for the playoffs. This year's first round matchups (best of 7 hexidecifinal):

32 Seattle at 1 Tampa Bay
31 Buffalo at 2 Los Angeles
30 Arizona at 3 St. Louis
29 Edmonton at 4 Nashville
28 Ottawa at 5 Winnipieg
27 Florida at 6 Toronto
26 Colorado at 7 New Jersey
25 Detroit at 8 Las Vegas
24 Carolina at 9 Columbus
23 Philadelphia at 10 NY Islanders
22 Chicago at 11 Washington
21 Minnesota at 12 Pittsburgh
20 Montreal at 13 Dallas
19 Anaheim at 14 NY Rangers
18 Boston at 15 San Jose
17 Calgary at 16 Vancouver

Rounds:

Hexidecifinal 32 --> 16
Octofinal 16 --> 8
Quarterfinal 8 --> 4
Semifinal 4 --> 2
Final 2 --> 1

I was just making the joke that the Wild were a crappy team in the playoffs. Of course there's no real way to keep a team that goes into a late swoon from the postseason.

Once we get rid of overtime and the shootout and go back to simple 2-point games ...

Five Point Games:

5 - regulation win
4 - OT win
3 - shootout win
2 - shootout loss
1 - OT loss
0 - regulation loss

Remember, the points are just accounting, they matter just like points on "Whose Line Is It Anyway".

Read more on my proposal in the second half of this.

My offer, Senator, is nothing. No overtime. Win or lose in regulation or you tie. The end.

Shorter RS means a late swoon is more damaging.

I would find that acceptable in the regular season. However, Pandora's box, from which the shoot-out emerged and hath wrought it's spell upon the masses, had been opened.

The 8 divisions of 4 works better from a scheduling perspective

Start with 82
32 games vs other conference - leaves 50
12 teams outside our division x 2 = 24 leaves 26
8 games vs your division = 24
which leaves 2 left over. Reduce schedule to 80 games.

Argos win the Grey Cup, Toronto FC wins MLS Cup.
I'm sensing a trend here.

Oh, and Leafs lead the Pens 3-0. :D

Off to Detroit bright and early to catch a couple games (FLA, BOS). Going to be first time at the pizza box, looking forward to checking it out.

Haven't been yet. Reviews I've heard from other fans are mixed.

I was only on the 100 level, but it's quite nice. A whole lot more to choose from, concourses don't get corralled with cattle like the Joe always did, comfortable seats. Lower level is decently steep, uppers more so. Gives great sight lines though, while staying relatively close to the ice. Scoreboard is massive.

That said, I'll always miss the Joe. You can't replace the charm and character of an old rink.

Seeing how I've been to Tampa's Amalie arena a lot, they share a lot of similarities. Both great rinks in their own way. Probably 2 of the top 5-10 in the league.

That and obviously with new rink comes decently pricier tickets. Again, comparing to Tampa, where as the Joe was on par or slightly cheaper than Amalie, LCA is slightly more expensive for comparable seats.

Staying at the Crown Plaza riverfront, took the Q line light rail thingy to/from. Super cheap ($1.50 for 3 hours/$3 day pass unlimited (only good for day of use, not 24 hours from purchase)), relatively efficient despite the snow (got slowed down right near the rink, guessing traffic back up), but an easy way to get to/from downtown to the rink.

Thanks! That answers any questions I was going to have. The wife and I found it super easy to get around via people mover when we stayed at either the Crown or Courtyard to go to games at JLA. And Greektown was right off the people mover too. I was wondering how much of a PITA it was going to be to stay down there and get to games at the Pizza Box.

Not sure if we'll make it to a game this year, we lucked into getting to three games last season (including the finale).

Ya. Q Line runs up/down Woodward, starting from Congress and heading N. Only 4 stops to LCA. Seemed really convenient.

Conversely, if you wanted to eat/drink pregame, I believe Cobo Joe's and Tommy's have shuttle service as well.

In neat news, just secured tickets to the all star weekend in Tampa.

Leafs-Wings in what looks like a half empty Pizza Box. Sad, really really sad
