Re: NHL 2017.1: We turn over a new Leaf and still find a Penguin

Can't find the Winter Olympics thread, if there is one, but Russia has been barred due to the doping scandal. All athletes who do compete must do so neutrally. I have no idea what this means for the hockey team, as the couple articles I read had more to do with individuals.

And the KHL probably will prohibit their contracted players from participating.

College kids!!!!

7th place last 2 Olympics and the Worlds this year. Wrong number.
Yeah the Czechs have been pretty garbage since ~2014. Favorites are, in order:

1. Sweden.
With the KHL out the Swedes have the best league and and a deep base to draw from.

2. Canada.
I mean, it's Canada. The Spengler Cup team could probably win this. For them it's just a matter of building a good team.

3. Switzerland.
Call me crazy but don't be shocked if the Swiss win this thing or at least medal. The Swiss League is low key one of the best leagues in Europe and they've put a strong emphasis on player development. They've done well in World Championships and with other countries missing players and the Russians out...

Well, there's always the Slovaks or The Møøse.

Will a twelfth team be added to replace Doping Ivan? If not, Slovakia actually has a shot in their group.

@DarrenDreger: Hurricanes owner Peter Karmanos is currently meeting with Tom Dundon, the Canes prospective buyer. Should have news on the sale today.

Re: NHL 2017.1: We turn over a new Leaf and still find a Penguin

Karmanos getting out of NHL ownership is a good thing. He's an ass. Not quite on Jeremy Jacobs' level, but he's up there.

For a bit of trivia, Don Waddell is the president of Gale Force Sports & Entertainment, owner of the Carolina Hurricanes.

Don Waddell formerly was the president of the Atlanta Thrashers when they were sold to True North...

Re: NHL 2017.1: We turn over a new Leaf and still find a Penguin

Hardly a surprise.

A day after the city of Seattle signed an memorandum of understanding on a $660 million renovation of KeyArena, NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman announced the the league has authorized a Seattle ownership group to file an application expansion for a franchise to begin play in the 2020-21 season.

I hope Portland is the eventual destination of a FL franchise, and I hope the N stops at 32 forever.

To the contrary, a Seattle expansion team brings the Western Conference up to 16 teams, and balances everything out. One of the Canes/Panthers moves to Quebec City to become the new Nordiques (hopefully they use this goal horn, even though the old franchise apparently never did).

Discussion on TSN1050 today that the prospective owner of the Quebec franchise wants a separate Quebec. In the opinion of Gord Miller, as long as he's around, Quebec won't happen.

And now:
8 divisions of 4.
Playoffs:
Eliminator round: 3 at 2 for 1 game. Winner plays #1 in a 4/7 in the Round of 16.

QF and beyond: Most points v least points etc.

Figures. I was told QC is the separatist stronghold.
