Re: NHL 2015 - Trouble Bruin! Ranger Leaf jumped the King Shark! Just Ducky!

The Ballard hit doesn't warrent a hearing.
He spun away from the hit and tried to duck it, yes the result was bad, but that's not on Martin.

If Ballard doesn't duck he's out cold for the night and it's even worse.

It would have been a vicious board/charge if Ballard did nothing. You're wrong, as usual.

Ok bud.
That's why there was no penalty called, no hearing and pretty much every commentator I've heard on it says it was Ballard spinning away that caused the result.
Could it have been bad if he doesn't spin?
Yeah, it could have, but that's not what actually happened.
What are they supposed to do, consider the physics of what "might" have happened instead of what did happen?
Good luck with that.

Sure. The message is don't protect yourself. Cause if you do it's going to be your fault you got your head smashed in.

Ballard was 4 feet from the boards and the player that hit him was skating perpendicular to the boards for over 20'. If that's not dangerous then I don't know what the hell is.

Whether it was a bad hit or not, penalties/fines should never be based on outcome to the player who was hit (injury, etc). Should always be based on the act.

Exactly and in this case, as unfortunate as it is, Ballard is mostly responsible for the outcome.
If he doesn't spin away and duck, he isn't out cold on the ice.
With his concussion history I get why he did it, but it made him vulnerable and then there was nothing Martin could do.

You know he isn't out cold on the ice how? If we can't make assumptions then neither can you.

Looking at the video, I guess maybe I understand how people are saying the way Ballard spun was a contributing factor to the way the hit turned out? Even so, Martin had a running start at Ballard when he was dangerously close to the boards. Seems like it warrants at least SOME supplementary attention.

He could have :
a) not left his feet for the hit and
b) not led with the forearm/elbow.

Exactly. My argument is, even if he doesn't spin out the way, which did make it worse, this was a dangerous play by the boards that should be penalized, and probably should be suspendable. I am not advocating for penalizing based on the outcome, the actions in this case were what needs to be penalized.

I agree with this. (I also am generally not a huge fan of penalizing based on outcome rather than on the action of the offender.)

I agree with this. (I also am generally not a huge fan of penalizing based on outcome rather than on the action of the offender.)

41.1 Boarding – A boarding penalty shall be imposed on any player or goalkeeper who checks or pushes a defenseless opponent in such a manner that causes the opponent to hit or impact the boards violently in the boards. The severity of the penalty, based upon the impact with the boards, shall be at the discretion of the Referee.

How was it not boarding?

41.5 Game Misconduct Penalty - When a major penalty is imposed under this rule for a foul resulting in an injury to the face or head of an opponent, a game misconduct shall be imposed.

I think the argument can be made that Martin using an elbow to drive his head into the boards could justify a major.

And not that I agree with the reasoning, but what is stranger about the non-call is that refs usually call a penalty on an injury just to appease the team with the injured player to keep the game from getting out of control.

Re: NHL 2015 - Trouble Bruin! Ranger Leaf jumped the King Shark! Just Ducky!

I used to be a fan of Doc Emrick because of his depth of hockey knowledge. Edzo and Pierre Mcdouchcanoe are just lazy hacks that have a good "radio voice" for the broadcasts.

But watching tonight's Red Wings / Maple Leafs game has been just ear bleeding bad. Their chatter about players seems phoned in, like all three are complacent with their jobs and can't wait to catch a taxi to Detroit Metro as soon as they sign off.

Pre-game discussion focused on Franzen, Datsyuk, and Zetterberg for the Wings; Lupul, Kessel for the Leafs. Edzo was discussing Kronwall like it was 2008, and talking about how the kids like Helm and Ericksson are showing breakout moments. I had to double check to make sure Comcast wasn't accidentally airing a replay or worse by just airing an NHL 2015 sim-game in real time.

Maybe I've gotten spoiled by watching the home town announcers of various teams thanks to NHL Game Center Live, but Holy wah is the NBC broadcast team awful lately.

Even the cast off Sportsnet/TSN guys would be better.

It's such a shame that NBC hired on Darren Dreger and Bob McKenzie and are completely under utilizing them. :(

NMU's Mike Santorelli scores the game winner in the shootout against the Red Wings. Pardon me while I enjoy Santorelli getting the GWG, laugh hysterically, then down whiskey because the Wings lost.

Wings couldn't finish in the first period on all their chances, and it came back to bite them in the third.

And somehow, Jimmy Howard is going to catch blame for the lack of offense tonight.

No doubt. But hey, sole possession of first!

When did I say it wasn't?

Wild once again wait until the third period to give a hell, but this time the result is what usually happens. Might start tuning in to the games roughly two hours late from here on.
