NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

It's going to be awkward when they raise the banner in Manchester. Wonder if Ontario raises a banner too. ;)

(I know Ontario won't but it's funny that the AHL franchise wins a cup and then they inherit them. The whole Pacific Division is going to be weird next year in the AHL. The five California teams will only play 68 games, the rest of the league 76.)

Some of the things their doing are weird. My parents have a half season ticket to the Adirondack Flames who are swapping with Stockton. They've announced they are increasing ticket prices for next year. Basically they are swapping a higher league for a lower league and asking people to pay more. The Flames folks said they just have to "educate" people when they got some backlash. The Albany Devils play an hour up the highway, my parents live basically between the two arenas, and it's not like the Flames have any history in the area they've only been there for one year before they pulled this California swap

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

I dunno about this whole winning the Cup on home ice thing... My dad has tried to see that happen in 1971... Yea :( Then he got to see the Toilet Seats skate around with Le Coupe again in 1973... Not sure I like the ju-ju associated with Stanley hanging out in Chicago :(
To shift the karma from bad to good, here's what you do. A few hours before face-off, go to a gas station and do a Captain Serious fill-up. Specifically, put in exactly $19 in gas. I did this prior to Game 6 of the Anaheim series, and it worked out beautifully. The rest of the story: I stopped in NW Indiana for a quick fill-up before hitting Chicago prices. The pump auto-stopped exactly on 19. What's that you say? This makes no sense? Well, the pump didn't make any cents either.;)

Hadn't planned on doing it, but naturally embraced the good omen when it came my way.

As the author indicates, some of those prices are simply pranks. Even if a fan did have $71,000 to spend, a single Standing Room pass is the absolute last ticket purchase they'd make.:D But even among the "rational" offers, I've got to believe that many (if not most) of the ticketholders are planning on going to the game -- unless someone is willing to pay the equivalent of a new car for their set of seats.

Will quite a few tickets change hands for $1,000 - $4000 a pop? Yes, that level of insanity will occur. And yes, it's a shame that the average fan is priced out of the building for the most important games.

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

This is pretty cool.

The only US team to win the Cup during the 50's - the Detroit Red Wings
The only US team to win the Cup during the 60's - the Chicago Blackhawks.

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

Blackhawks better petition the Lightning to wear their home Blue at the UC Monday so the Hawks can wear white. Blackhawks have never won a cup wearing red as a primary jersey color. Maybe they have their black thirds laying around they can wear.

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

If the 'Hawks win tonight (or Wednesday....), talk about a "dynasty" seems absurd to me, even if it does average out to a cup every other year for six years.....

Does that means that if the LA Kings win next year or the year after, we'd have two "dynasties" at the same time?

So, you don't think 3 Cups in 6 years is a big deal?

Good to know.

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

I think it'd be fair to call them or the Kings a dynasty if either wins their 3rd cup within the next couple years. What I find hilarious though is the whole Kane/Toews are the most clutch players evar!11 narrative.

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

The Kings won't anyway.

Win or lose, dynasty or whatever you want to call it, it's been a heckuva run for the Hawks and has been a really fun ride.

Early summer for me has become a tradition of games that matter every other night with friends and family coming over to hang and watch and celebrate.

Hopefully we get another 6 years just like it!

Wouldn't that be great? :p

I agree that it shouldn't be taken to "ever," but the carnage in their wake probably find nothing whatsoever hilarious about it. ;)

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

I wouldn't write off the Kings as they're still one of the deepest orgs in the NHL but Lombardi's loyalty might cost them in the long run. The Richards contract is awful just to point out one example.

Definitely. I just think team depth and their blue line is why CHI is so successful, more so than any particular player(s).

They certainly have a supporting cast. That being said they wouldn't have gotten this far without them. And, the NHL Stanley Cup playoffs is riddled every year with clutch star players who disappear. That's hockey.

This.

I didn't mean to say they aren't clutch. They are. Look back over Hawks games the past 7 years for key moments in key games and you'll see those two an awful lot. They are incredibly clutch.

And as for Toews, his highlight reel extends into international play as well going all the way back to the WJC where he single handedly gutted the US team.

The media is doing what they do though and they are the flavor of the day.

Well their most "clutch" player this year has been Antoine Vermette, arguably. Point is, you could replace Toews with Tavares or Kane with Kessel and if you kept everything else the same that team would still win 3 cups.

This may be the dumbest thing you've ever typed.

Think about that.

No. And No again. And No a third time.

Just plain No.

Re: NHL 2015, Part 3: Stanley Cup and Offseason

Coming from you that's a compliment so thanks.

If you really think Toews is far and away better than the best NHL centers you're delusional. Now that said there's only a handful of players you could replace either with and still get the same results but I don't think Toews is better than Crosby for instance or Kane is better than AO.
