Re: NHL 2012: The Chase for the Cup

Based on Bradley-Terry rankings (i.e., KRACH) found here, the updated (after 4/14) most likely outcomes are:

West: LAK in 5 (20.9%), STL in 6 (27.5%), CHI in 6 (19.8%), NSH in 6 (21.2%)
East: NYR in 6 (28.1%), BOS in 6 (21.9%), NJD in 5 (23.2%), PHI in 4 (28.0%)

Overall winning probabilities:
West
VAN 29.1% - LAK 70.9%
STL 72.6% - SJS 27.4%
PHX 47.4% - CHI 52.6%
NSH 56.2% - DET 43.8%

East
NYR 74.2% - OTT 25.8%
BOS 57.9% - WAS 42.1%
FLA 23.9% - NJD 76.1%
PIT 15.3% - PHI 84.7%

As always, KRACH is not a perfect predictive system. In fact, it's not predictive at all; it's retrodictive. Home-ice advantage, momentum, and the like can not be accounted for reliably, so they are ignored.

Notes: It looks like this PHX-CHI series could flip back and forth until we get an actual winner or a two game lead. I have the means to start predicting next round's matchups. Would anyone be interested in this post getting a bit longer?

Seriously Wings: Rinne. High stick side. His kriptonite. Repeat often. For reals.

You know, the team defending Rinne might know about it too and not only may be defending against it, but they may have worked on it with him since he left the farking AHL, given that he hasn't been exposed as a minor league goaltender by the entirety of the NHL.

Re: NHL 2012: The Chase for the Cup

A multi-puck situation happened at an RPI women's game my sophomore year. After our goalie stopped a shot during a kill, a second puck fell out of her pads and the teams started playing both pucks. It actually took about 20 seconds for the refs to realize there were two pucks on the ice, despite the very loud angry yells from the pep band and other fans in the arena.

Re: NHL 2012: The Chase for the Cup

Can these Wings fans at the Joe ***** about the calls on the ice any more?
Well, how dare they call penalties on them? Don't they know they're the Red Wings?!?!?! They're entitled to the Cup!!!

Seriously, though, this is a great series. Going to go 6 or 7.

Wow. What a move by Datsyuk.

Nice job Pavel the magician! Finally, the Wings score cut the lead in half. Wings 1 : 2 Preds

Re: NHL 2012: The Chase for the Cup

I know I'm late to the party on this, but I'm curious about the Shaw/Smith hit from last night...

Can someone explain the rule behind that being a 5 and a DQ? I know that goalies are never "fair game" when playing the puck, but Shaw didn't seem to have any intent to injure on that... He was just going in aggressively to prevent Smith from playing the puck as he often does... Also, there was talk about the refs waiting to see Smith's injury before giving a final ruling... How does that come into play? If a DQ was warranted, wouldn't the ruling need to be made immediately? Not trying to cry about the ruling, just trying to become familiar with the rulebook on this one...

I thought the only situation where an injury came into effect the ruling was with blood on a high stick....
