Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Pick Your Overtime Winners!

I will never understand why guys skate down without speed on a shootout or penalty shot attempt. It's never made any sense to me. Move your feet to make the goalie have less time to react an read you.

Bertuzzi's 13 (or whatever he has) shootout winners disagree with you.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Pick Your Overtime Winners!

LOLungo's no trade clause would probably make that difficult though.
It's a volatile situation that would be easily defused if he did accept a trade. But he's done so well, it's just that he's been the scapegoat. In the regular season he was fifteenth in the league in GAA, just behind "brick walls" Pekka Rinne, Tim Thomas, and Flower and twelfth in the league in Save %, right behind Tim Thomas and Jimmy Howard.

Is he really as disastrous as the Vancouver media and fans make him out to be?

I'm going to post some stats, tell me who is Luongo, Marc-Andre Fleury, Antti Niemi, Ilya Bryzgalov, and Tim Thomas only by their career playoff stats:
Goalie A: 6 Shutouts, 96 Goals Against, .935 Sv%, 2.02 GAA
Goalie B: 5 Shutouts, 157 Goals Against, .916 Sv%, 2.53 GAA
Goalie C: 5 Shutouts, 196 Goals Against, .905 Sv%, 2.67 GAA
Goalie D: 2 Shutouts, 123 Goals Against, .904 Sv%, 2.87 GAA
Goalie E: 3 Shutouts, 84 Goals Against, .908 Sv%, 2.82 GAA

Which goalie from that list is MISSING a Stanley Cup ring?

<!-- Answers and the year they won a Stanley Cup:
A = Tim Thomas, 2011
B = Roberto Luongo, not yet
C = Marc-Andre Fleury, 2009
D = Antti Niemi, 2010
E = Ilya Bryzgalov, 2007-->

I think he's the scapegoat because he lays eggs in games at the most inopportune times.

Flower has done similar with Pittsburgh, and yet the media is silent because he has a Stanley Cup ring. I do agree that there have been some epic fails by Luongo; but I think having such potent offense masks the problems the team has with defense (by all players, not just the blue-liners). When the offense can't get going, the goalie will look flawed.

Osgood continues to get belittled that he was the "worst goaltender ever" behind the "best defense ever."

Oh, and you're close. You got three 'tenders right.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Pick Your Overtime Winners!

Let me say that I didn't bring this up to show how "bad" he's been, but even though Schneider only played in about 30 games (I believe a career high)...the numbers aren't even close. There are many who simply think at this stage of their careers, Schneider is simply a better option. Granted, he hasn't had to play a season as the #1...but you can't wait forever. He's gonna be a restricted free agent after this year.

As for Fleury, I don't care that he has a ring. He is certainly not an elite goaltender. I'm not sure where he ranks exactly, but he's not near the top.

Re: NHL 2012: Playoffs! Pick Your Overtime Winners!

Based on Bradley-Terry rankings (i.e., KRACH) found here, the updated (after 4/18, old KRACHs) most likely outcomes are:

West: LAK in 5 (44.0%), STL in 5 (40.1%), PHX in 6 (24.9%), NSH in 5 (55.3%)
East: NYR in 6 (41.3%), BOS in 5 (30.5%), FLA in 6 (23.1%), PHI in 5 (54.0%)

Overall winning probabilities:
West
VAN 17.5% - LAK 82.5%
STL 85.7% - SJS 14.3%
PHX 68.4% - CHI 31.6%
NSH 91.1% - DET 8.91%

East
NYR 70.8% - OTT 29.2%
BOS 76.1% - WAS 23.9%
FLA 63.2% - NJD 36.8%
PIT 9.74% - PHI 90.3%

As always, KRACH is not a perfect predictive system. In fact, it's not predictive at all; it's retrodictive. Home-ice advantage, momentum, and the like can not be accounted for reliably, so they are ignored. (KRACHs not yet updated)

Notes: It figures that the least likely outcome was the one we came out of last night with (no sweeps). That's probability for you though.

I think he is inconsistent but at times he has shown that he could have the ability to be an elite goaltender in the future. He showed that in Game 6 and 7 in the 2009 finals. He is not elite yet but he still could be in the future if he can find some consistency.
