One of the pro Pittsburgh teams decided that canning coaches rather than generational talent was the better route and it paid off. It'd be a big mistake to do the opposite here.It was awful nice of the Steelers to give Mike Tomlin a lifetime contract after completely underachieving this season and running his two best players (Bell, Brown) out of town! The guy's got more job security than a SCOTUS justice! Nick Saban is on a hotter seat in Alabama than coach Tomlin.
While true, part of the issue with MM's scheme was that there were too many plays in which the QB/WR would improvise based on coverage and only having a handful of different route combinations that rely on the WR to beat a defender/a perfect throw... he made his own bed. You could realistically see more impact from some of the newer WR's before their 3rd year with the team and maybe even Graham if the offense wasn't so poorly schemed. Combine that with (not that he's all that effective anymore to begin with) Cobb getting hurt and Jordy being traded, Graham coming in and later two new guys coming in during the DET game (Valdes-Scantling and St. Brown)... it was a mess. Thompson deserves a lot of the blame for the defense and some of the various offensive holes (TE, no depth behind Bulaga, nobody to replace older declining WRs) but MM's impact on close games (not understanding basic probability on 4th downs) probably cost us at least a win or two this year not to mention that Seahawks debacle a few years ago.
