Re: NFL 2016-17: Your Fantasy Team Will Suck This Year.

I think they're idiots, but ****ed off, hell no. If I got mad at everything that I disagreed with my life would be really **** miserable. Afterall, its a free country, they can do what they want, and it has no effect on me, so why should I care?

I figure they have the right to do it, and I have the right to call them disrespectful idiots and move on.

Re: NFL 2016-17: Your Fantasy Team Will Suck This Year.

I figure they have the right to do it, and I have the right to call them disrespectful idiots and move on.

But my conservative friends aren't moving on. Every day, it's like "WAAAAAAAAAAH! THAT MAN IS NOT STANDING FOR THE NATIONAL ANTHEM! OUTRAGE! SCANDAL!"

I figure there are legitimate things to get angry over. For me, this is not one of them. I'd love to tell the people fomenting outrage to call me when Kaepernick shoots your dog, has inappropriate relations with their mother, and pours sugar in your gas tank in one fell swoop.

It's the "you have a right to say what you want as long as I agree with it" mentality that social media has. A bright spot for American Culture for sure...

Trying to officiate something at full speed, without the aid of replay equipment, is much more difficult than most people realize. Some penalties are called at the discretion of the officials (Was the person who received the hit changing his position in some way that led to a dangerous situation that could not be avoided bye the hitter? Did the official have a good line of sight to see everything necessary to make the call? Etc..) Fining officials for missed calls could lead to a lowering of officiating quality as the top ranks may not view it as being worth their time and effort anymore.

Let's back up a moment here. Calls get missed. I think everyone gets that. But you can't be missing the big stuff like that. The head contact, and concussions, are a prime flash point and are a major point of emphasis these days. If they're going to miss something that egregious, then yes, take their checks.

Since NFL refs are already well off individuals from activities outside of the NFL, you'll see the best of them leave for the NCAA because they'd rather not deal with the indignities of the league treating them that way.

The average NFL referee salary was $173,000 in 2013, and it is set to rise to $201,000 by 2019.

On average, college football referees get paid $3,000 per game, as of 2014. The exact salary differs based on the division, conference and type of game, such as a conference championship or bowl game.

Can you imagine how many people in red states are going to have a rage stroke because an entire team sits out the national anthem on the 15th anniversary of 9/11?
If there's anything I hope for out of this it's a greater questioning of the "need" to play the national anthem before every event. To be frank, our anthem is cheapened by this practice, it's lost any meaning it had. If you wanna play it on holidays like Memorial Day or 4th of July or Veterans Day, fine. But Week 2 with some local singer who thinks it's an Idol audition? Maybe not so much.

Baseball is even worse with their insistence on playing "God Bless America" every week.

Agreed. Unfortunately it's one of those braindead things that once it happens you can't get rid of it, like "Under God" in the pledge. Or, ya know, the pledge.

When 90% of the population doesn't give a crap but 10% are pinwheel-eyed nutso for something, the 10% win.

Plus the NFL is almost as herpy as NASCAR.

I'm just glad it's my team; it gives me that extra "f-ck you" enjoyment.

And yet the Cowboys couldn't wear a sticker to show support for the Dallas police killed.

Goodell for president!

Remember the MLB not letting the Mets wear NYFD hats on the 9/11 anniversary.

The leagues do not allow anything to mess with the sanctity of their merchandise contracts. Those are the raison d'etre of the leagues.

Must've had a change of heart after 9/11, because the Nats wore VT hats after the shooting in Blacksburg.

NFL refs don't need the NFL paycheck. They are all independently wealthy from their careers outside the league. In order to continue working for the NFL, the league has to be able to match or exceed the pay of their day jobs. If you tell them that their pay could start to be fined for missed calls (something their union would like to dispute), you're going to see fewer and fewer of these top-end officials on the field. How did it go when the replacement refs officiated the games those four or five years ago?

I can't imagine any official agreeing to work under those conditions. Your job is to make judgment calls from your limited position in space and time. The all-seeing camera eye can be nearly everywhere and everywhen. There is no way even the best official does not miss many, many calls.

The standard for an official cannot be "truth." It has to be "meets or exceeds the approximation of truth that we deem defines an adequate official."

Or to put it another way, you can rank order the officials and fire the bottom half (though I doubt that will get you much of a pool), but you can't rank them against the camera and fire them all. Or you can, but that commits you to going to an all-electronic system, which is impractical.

Huh, another worthy 'tribute' for the Sandy Hook incident was fine though, with stickers and such.

Ah, I forgot, Roger doesn't like consistency.

I assume Roger himself hasn't made a single decision in his tenure. He goes to the office every day and there's a tabulation of the owners' votes, and he does whatever the majority says.
