Well-earned Bengals.

You can take the man out of prison, but you can't take the prison out of the man.

I didn't realize they re-made The Longest Yard in Cincinnnati tonight.

I was out in the garage/shop for a brief time early this morning and did not turn the heater on. I was thinking "there's no way in he!! people should play football in this." Then I thought of Bud Grant. He's nearing 90 years old, but he should be on the Vikes' sideline today along with any surviving Purple People Eaters.

This is why I'm mad about the new stadium. If it was getting shoved down our throats, make it an open roof. Go old school Vikings on the bit. No heaters on the sidelines, use the weather to the team's advantage.

Doesn't matter. The Vikes couldn't win a Super Bowl as an outdoor team either.

True. Don't have Bud on the sidelines for that one. But those teams knew how to get there. Did they use their advantage on cold weather fields in a way that left them as undeserved favorites in warm weather/indoor super bowl games? Maybe.

Football is an outdoor sport, no matter the weather, IMO. And yes, it does give teams an advantage. Just like the heat down south, it's the cold up here.

to entice peeps to pay the money to buy seats and "pay for" the stadium you need living room comforts. sad, but that's the case.

It's not really an advantage. ESPN reported that in the history of the nfl, only 0.2% of all games have been played below temps of +10. While it appears that you have an advantage due to living there, the actual game experience just isn't there.

If coaches aren't allowed on the field, why didn't Joey Porter (who was no angel in his playing days, either) wasn't flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct? No defending Pacman, just wondering. Doesn't make sense.

Because NFL refs are terrible at their jobs. League will look at it I'm sure.

I think with Bud Grant, it was something else--and attitude that there are no excuses and that the other team is not as tough or as strong. It worked for him.

Until Superbowl Sunday came around.

A weather related story. When I was nine, I was the regional PP& K winner (Dakotas, Minn. and Iowa, I think) and got to perform at half time at Met Stadium. Middle of November, I think, and my first visit to a pro game of any kind. Pure hayseed in the City. From the stands, the field looked beautiful--still green and smooth. Not at all like the brown and bumpy glorified pastures back on the prairie. When I got down on the field I was shocked. Loose turf, gaps, real uneven and lumpy. That's when I realized it was slugfest going on down there.
