Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

mookie is so proud of bill :D toss GLA right under that bus!

Belichick issues categorical blanket denial.

New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said he was shocked to hear about the Deflategate controversy on Monday and had no explanation for the under-inflated footballs.

Belichick said he had no knowledge of the footballs being under-inflated before the game. He also said the team practices with footballs that are difficult to handle.

“I think we all know that quarterbacks, kickers, specialists have certain preferences on the footballs,” Belichick said. “They know a lot more than I do. They’re a lot more sensitive to it than I am. I hear them comment on it from time to time, but I can tell you and they will tell you that there’s never any sympathy whatsoever from me on that subject. Zero. Tom’s personal preferences on his footballs are something that he can talk about in much better detail and information than I could possibly provide.”

I read somewhere else that the referees, at halftime, removed the 12 Patriot footballs used in the first half and replaced them with 12 properly-inflated balls before the start of the second half.

Some "overly-enthusiastic ballboy, acting entirely on his own initiative, unbeknownst to the rest of the organization," will eventually be found to be at fault, no doubt.

Following hte tweets of his presser, he's saying he has no knowledge. Conflicting information!! Whodathunk!! Plus, the NFL hasn't contacted him yet. Um, what did they do during their investigation? Who the heck DID they talk to?

There probably are a few ways to reduce air pressure in the footballs without "deflating" them. Someone earlier spoke of reducing their temperature, for example (did the ball boy stick them in a refrigerator or in front of an air conditioner?); or one could squeeze them hard enough (mechanically, not by hand) to force air out (did he leave the bag of balls under something that squashed them?)

I wonder how far the conspiracy theories might reach!! ;)

Jackson does, however, recall one interesting moment during the first half that has something to do with the latest controversy. He recalls, during a television timeout, there was an especially long delay that prompted him to approach an official.

The game official mentioned something about their efforts to locate a usable football. Shortly after, Jackson noticed that the Patriots were using the Colts' footballs late in the first half. Jackson said it was odd to him that New England couldn't find a football to use, especially in the AFC Championship Game.

But he never understood that what he was witnessing what would indeed be the beginnings of a controversy that has engulfed the sports world since.

I'm sorry, but why is anyone asking Tom Brady about his balls? Don't we all know that Brady's balls have been in Gisele's purse for years?

Wait... that's wrong of me. Brady is the one with the purse.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

So, an off-hand comment by one of the morning radio DJs has changed my feelings on this. It had been reported that the Colts brought the issue up to the refs because the Ravens tipped them off. At first I was thinking "well that doesn't surprise me." But the DJ was talking with Dan Shaughnessy and he said how, after the Ravens game, in their press conference, both Brady and Bellichek said "read the rulebook - that trick play is legal!!!!" And I think it got the Ravens' panties in such a bunch, the Ravens wanted to give it back by finding a rule that no team in the NFL follows, nor does the league actually monitor much, if at all, to give them a "read the rulebook!!!" moment. And while I'm sure they're all enjoying this mess immensely, I wonder if they thought it would blow up into this mess. Now, you know the NFL will start enforcing this on a regular basis and making it miserable for all the other QBs who do this, thereby making everyone hate the Patriots even more. I mean, even the guy from the Colts that intercepted the football is now saying he didn't notice too much of a difference. Why is he changing his story? I think it's because he didn't expect this story to spiral out of control like this.

Now, that being said, those press conferences yesterday were so stupid. Is the NFL done with their investigation? If not, then why did those press conferences happen? Brady said the NFL has not contacted him. Why not? And who is advising the Patriots? Seriously, it could not have been worse for Tom Brady if he just said Monday/Tuesday "Look, yeah, I did make the footballs the way I like them, I honestly didn't think this was a big deal because I'm not the only one and the league never follows up with it, the weather was so bad, blah blah blah. I'm truly sorry, I'll take the hit for this and accept any fine/punishment" or something like that, could it? Get out ahead of it and end it. Those two press conferences made both of them look so bad. I can't believe they let Brady stay out there for so long. Did someone tell both to deny deny deny? It looks so much worse now than it did earlier in the week.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

The morning sports talk radio show here brought two official NFL footballs in, one inflated to 12.5 psi and one to 10.5 psi. No one, including a former NFL linebacker, could tell which was which. Maybe if they threw passes outdoors in cold weather and tracked successful catches they may have seen a difference though.

That's the first i've heard of anyone doing something like that and not being able to tell the difference. At 2 psi Im pretty sure I could.

Cowherd tested two footballs on his show the other day. He said it was clear which was which as your fingers sink in to give better grip when less inflated.

In the article I linked a day or 2 ago, the Yahoo sports guy running his (extremely scientific ;)) experiment did remark that football's inflated to double digit psi's were extremely hard to feel any difference.

He specifically mentioned that it is nothing like going from 7 to 5 (obviously), where am already soft ball is becoming moreso.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

With the strength that active NFL players have in their hands, it's very easy to believe that they can tell a noticeable difference between 10.5 psi and 12.5psi.

I still think nothing's going to come of this in terms of material punishment, and that's not truly a big deal at all, but it's fun to watch the Cheatriots squirm a bit going into the Super Bowl. :)

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Jeremy Lane of the Seahawks is trying to bring his team to the forefront of peoples' minds by stating that Rob Gronkowski "isn't that good." Oh Jeremy. There is nothing you can say right now to turn the focus onto your team. Sorry. Nice attemtp though. Unfortunately, the media circus isn't leaving the Patriots.

Spot on.

I'm surprised he didn't do that, especially as Belichick set him up for it perfectly. And Brady could have then said, "look, there's no question that the footballs in the second half were fine and if anything I threw the ball even better then. Fine me, and let's get back to football."

No one would have dared to do anything to a football without Brady's knowledge and approval. While ordinary people might not be able to notice much difference in how much the footballs are inflated, someone who is as meticulous as Brady would be finely attuned to any minor difference.

Was he concerned that Goodell would have suspended him for the Super Bowl? If so, why not contact him privately first, he'd be doing Goodell a big favor too by ending the controversy so quickly.
