Except he wasn't falling down making the catch. He took two steps, started to fall, and then went to the ground. That was a bad application of the rule IMNSHO.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

The NFL has had a few years to change that rule after the play in Chicago and they haven't. Hate the rule if you want (I do) but Dallas in no way got screwed. Sounds like they applied the rule as written.

I certainly thought it was a catch and was yelling at my TV and calling McCarthy an idiot for wasting our last timeout.

He knew the rule. I did not.

From a rule perspective you are correct, Garrett would of done the same thing if the roles were reversed, however in no way does the NFL look good or gain viewership when their rules make for an anti-climatic ending when the game was setting up for Green Bay to win or lose on an exciting final drive.

Agreed.

Just arguing against the narrative that Dallas in some way got screwed. They didn't.

Indianapolis leads 14-10 at half, which means they will lose.

Agreed on all fronts. That was my reaction as well, and having had some time to think about it, I think it's a horse**** rule that was called correctly.

Why we watch college hockey instead...:D

From an article (http://sports.yahoo.com/news/former-nfl-official-highlights-biggest-221615494.html) on Yahoo Sports from a former NFL ref:

"After the game, Mike Pereira, a former NFL official and the former vice president of officiating for the NFL, explained on FOX why the reversal was correct. But after listening to his explanation I am actually less convinced that the right call was made.

The issue comes with whether or not Bryant made "a football move" before losing control. If Bryant does make a football move, it is a catch and a fumble (that he recovered). One example of a football move is stretching the ball towards the end zone, which it appears that Bryant did.

However, according to Pereira, it was not enough of a stretch.

"If you're going to the ground, you have to prove that you have the ball long enough to perform an act common to the game and do so," said Pereira. "And part of that is stretching all the way out and to me even though he moved the ball a little bit forward, they are not going to consider that a football act."

And herein lies the problem.

Pereira admits Bryant stretches the ball towards the end zone, but apparently it wasn't enough. So, now the official must determine the degree of stretching and reaching by the receiver as if they don't have enough to worry about.

It would seem that the player either reaches with the ball or he doesn't and Bryant pretty clearly tried to stretch the ball forward only being limited in actual distance by his shoulder pads.

After the game, Bryant was just as confused as anyone, saying he reached for the goal line and didn't understand why it was overturned.

The NFL has one problem when something most observers agree is a great catch is being overturned on a technicality. They have another problem entirely when they are asking officials to judge degrees of stretching."

Based upon that last post it was a terrible reversal, never mind the steps he took and I believe switching hands.

In my eyes he definitely stretched that arm out to try and get over the plane. Should have been first and goal at about a foot out.

Oh well. I'm choosing to focus on it screwing the Cowboys, not on it helping the Packers. :)

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

What is really being lost is that it was ruled a catch on the field. What does that mean? It means the refs supposedly had CONCLUSIVE EVIDENCE to overturn the call. CONCLUSIVE. EVIDENCE.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Unless Peyton is really hurt (and maybe even if he is) that crashing sound you hear is his window slamming shut. He can't throw the ball more than twenty yards. Once we were wondering if he had enough fingers for all the rings he was going to get. Now it looks like he could be one ring removed from Dan Marino.

Regardless, Rodgers would have had nearly 4 minutes needing only a field goal.

Certainly not a sure thing, but it's not like the play happened with 20 seconds left.

Packer haters will have Seattle to root for next week. All is not lost. ;)

.
20 yards is giving him 10 yards, He couldn't throw it ten yards with any accuracy. He was missing all over the place.

I mean, based on the way the rule seems to be applied, the fact that the ball popped out after hitting the ground appears to be conclusive evidence.

Interestingly enough, Steratore was the referee in the Calvin Johnson game, too.
