NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Is the impulse to suspend regardless of the legal side of the issue in any way related to the off chance that he might get away with it? (See: How Ben "What Rhymes With Sloth?" Roethlisberger got suspended)

Say what you will about how guilty AP seems to be here (he does, and I'm not feeling an ounce of pity for him... wherever the line is between discipline and abuse, he's certainly long jumped over it), but the idea that the NFL should wait until the legal side has played out is at least logical.

The NFL just uses it as a shield so the teams can keep players active. Has nothing to do with wanting to let due process play out.

Also it doesn't matter if he's guilty in the courts eyes. The NFL can use personal conduct policy to justify any suspensions.

Lastly, Hardy was found guilty in due process and is still playing. He's appealing but the season will almost be over before the court hears it.

How about this?

The nfl has a blanket suspension for everyone in the league for two games, wipes the slate clean, and says, moving forward...

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Peterson suspended pending outcome of legal proceedings.

Short of cutting him, this was the best course of action.
The Vikings are only suspending him because of backlash they're receiving from their sponsors. On a normal Tuesday, the team visits a short-term foster home for abused children. That, among many other things, had been suspended and the six Vikings that normally go did not do so this week. Bob Sansevere (local sports columnist) rattled off a list this morning on the KQRS morning show. The list of things like this is long and that's why the Vikings re-suspended Peterson.

this appears to be the "court of public opinion" weighing in, and over ruling someone legal rights.

But it's not.

First of all, the NFL is a company, and they can have rules that the employees agree to where they can suspend someone for things. Whatever they are. Remember the worst thing they can do is fire someone, that's it. From there backwards, they can suspend them (which is just short term firning) or ask the players to do some task that is in line with what the NFL can do- say more United Way spots. Nobody goes to jail.

Second, and really important, the NFL is an entertainment corporation. Which means that it's largely running on public opinion. So having the public decide that a penalty is/is not enough is actually quite valid. The public are the ones paying the bills for this form of entertainment. It's actually quite logical that people would think that a suspension is or is not appropriate, especially when more information is brought to light. If the NFL does not take it seriously, they do risk losing support. Which is all they have.

Well, yeah. Of course all of that's true.

I hope you know I'm not directing this at you- but more making the general comment. Your post was a good trigger.... I thought about that on the way to work when the players union rep was being interviewed on NPR- they were going to appeal Ray Rice's suspenion about due process and double jeopardy. While he has a point, it's also fair to realize that this isn't criminal prosecution, and that public opinions matter a lot. I'm not sure what was written in the players agreement, so it could be there.

One problem with the NFL right now is the total lack of consistency in penalties of off field transgressions. While it's fair that they do react to the public opinion, they should also do a better job evening out the punuishment. If player X gets time off until court date, then star Y should get the same treatment. But even with that, the opinion of the public really matters, unless they want to lose eyeballs.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

I'm a lifelong Vikings fan, but they could hardly look worse in this whole thing. Few things look worse than flip-flopping on issues that are much more important (in real life) than carrying a football well. But, certainly the Vikings are trying to preserve the flow of sponsor money and they may have largely succeeded. Says a lot about our society in a number of ways.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

What's the over/under on Condi Rice being the next NFL Commish?

I'd say the odds are pretty good.

I have to ask since her name keeps coming up (and I can't tell if it's a joke or not :o).... If it's not, what exactly is her tie to football? Between this and her being on the NCAA Football tourney committee, I don't get it... Why the interest in football for her all of a sudden?

It's not all of the sudden. She said in an interview while she was Secretary of State that NFL Commish was her dream job.

Re: NFL 2014-15: Iron Fist Getting Rusty?

Would owners hire a woman as commissioner?

They don't seem to tolerate them anywhere else.

It says everything about our society. What does the "mob" say, that's always the question.

It drives whether we choose to prosecute someone. Whether we choose to have the Feds investigate civil rights abuses. Whether we fire someone. It's the whole victim impact statement mentality. Who can work up the most anger, the most sympathy, the most feelings for "their side", not "what is the correct decision."

She has the resume
She has the interest
She is a change of pace
She is the wind beneath my wings
