New UND name to replace Fighting Sioux

Re: New UND name to replace Fighting Sioux

This issue is old and over with. The name was retired... the mascot was not as we didn't have one. The one issue you never and I mean never hear of is of all the Native Americans voices that were for nickname that were silenced. The fact remains that in every vote or poll that was given to the members of both tribes turned out overwhelmingly for UND to keep the name. So it begs the question, who gets to decide if it's hostile and abusive? 1 person? A minority of a small tribe in North Dakota? Some white people in Indianapolis?
BTW, UND fans and alumni are usually lumped into some kind of N.A. hater crowd... I was always proud to be a Sioux fan, always will too. I would like someone to point out another school that has done as much as UND for N.A. studies or for the members of the local tribes. Bet you can't.

I went almost all the way through the thread comments, chuckling at times (Dirty wins over Brent) but overall, disappointed that the post was treated lightly. Not a single post really gave a direct answer to the suggestion in my starting post. It doesn't matter anyway.

On a positive note, your post, willythekid, stood out well above the rest to me as well-reasoned and thoughtful. Immature responses may follow ...

Best post I have read anywhere on the subject. Well done my man, well done.

Even though I hate UND with a thousand passions, even more than WI, I was for the name. Charlie His Horse Farts Thunder ruined this whole thing, frankly. I'm fairly educated on the situation, as it played out, and it was a traveshamockery.

Buncha white people started this BS, and Charlie finished it, IMO.

How long does it take the average fanbase to get over losing a nickname? As new generations of fans come up the old name will die out naturally, I suppose.

O.K., I'll give it a go.

If Nebraska can be the Cornhuskers then North Dakota could certainly be the "Threshers". It's the 2nd largest wheat producing state in the country after Kansas. Sounds reasonably ominous, too. You'd have to get pretty creative with the mascot, I'd think, but, it's doable, with some creative thought. Only issue might be that a thresher is also a kind of shark.

Yep. He is the main dipwad who wouldn't let the Standing Rock Reservation vote on the name.

It's been 20 years since the Marquette Warriors changed their name and 90% of alumni still aren't over it. Perhaps they should have picked a less stupid name, but I doubt that really matters at all.

15 years and there is still, at the least, a highly vocal minority beating the Redskin drum, but I think alot of alums realize that Redskins had probably outlived it's welcome.

That being said, the university pretty much abandoned using the RedHawk logo for anything, anywhere about three years ago.It never really caught on.

I'm here to help. North Dakota Wheat ... North Dakota Fly Boys (they have an Air Force Base outside of Grand Forks) ... North Dakota Plains ... North Dakota Red Rivers ... North Dakota Rampaging Rivers ... North Dakota Floods ... North Dakota Warriors (hey, it ties in the air base and the Native Americans, see how clever I am?) ... North Dakota Engelstadts ... ok starting to stretch. they will probably go with something SO white bread and lame, so as not to offend anyone, like North Dakota Dakotans.

Two things
1. You misspelled Engelstads
2. Dakotans is Dakota for Dakotan so that will offend people.

f'1n ^. its pre crack of dawn and you expect me to remember how to spell "ice palace"? North Dakota Dakotan. that's ok by me. although it singular. Huskies, Lakers, Pioneers, Gophers, Riverhawks, Wolverines, Beavers, Badgers, Redhawks, Bulldogs, Buckeyes, all plural. just saying.

Which begs the question: Why does the state of North Dakota and UND continue to disrespect Native American Sioux by using 'Dakota'?

"The University of North"

They should be The Whioux. They can skate out onto the ice wearing Union Jack sweaters while the pep band plays Baba O'Reilly.
