The Yakuza

Robert Mitchum and Ken Takakura (the dad in Mr Baseball) star in this. While looking incredibly dated in style and direction (something that always bugged me about movies in the 70's; it's usually pretty obvious when the movie was made), the story is pretty darn good. It explains the codes/rules of honor of the Yakuza and Japanese life very well, has some nice twists and turns (although a couple are very obvious), and has a great ending.

I was pleasantly surprised at how good this was, as I had never heard of the movie before; it was suggested to me by Netflix, and of course if it's mafia-related, chances are I'll give it a look-see. Now, I won't say it was mind-blowing or OMGAFTWBBQAWESOME!, but it was a very solid movie overall.

And goldy: I always get free shipping from Amazon. I wait until I have enough to buy to get it, and it's not like I need to use any product I buy right this instant.

The Kids Are All Right

Wow, that was a bit darker than advertised. A little strong on the liberal/hippie/Lifetime Network agenda, for lack of a better phrase, that's for sure; especially how the dad's story ended in the movie. Still, it was quite good, and the awkward moments really made you think about the issues presented (man, how American Beauty really influenced this type of scene/plot creating). There were moments where you are just paralyzed, wishing you didn't have to watch the situation unfold because it was that awkward. It's not bad at all, just very uncomfortable, like you really are watching someone's family problems in real time.

Most of the acting is okay, but I have to give props to Annette Bening, who absolutely nails the "world class grade A bulldyke beech." Ruthless, despite showing a soft side at times. Most excellent performance.

Source Code and Unknown. I thought they were both outstanding in many ways, but Unknown had some inexplicable events and Source Code had a terrible ending.

Unknown did make you suspend belief a bit (for me, most notably was the "everyone knows how to stuntdrive"), BUT given the ending, some of those things I could forgive. I hope that doesn't spoil it for others, but that's the best way I knew how to put it.

Still liked that movie a lot, in the fun/action sense.

You dont know my taste in flicks as well as you think you do My tastes are actually rather eclectic

I didnt think I would like it much either but I did. It happens a lot. Movies like that that rock your emotions definitely are high on list of tastes...I just tend not to comment much on them

I saw Bridemaids last night at the cheap theater...yeah I guess I dont get what everyone saw in it. It wasnt bad but I found it rather forgettable.

Cedar Rapids – Ed Helms is an straight-laced insurance salesman who learns to cut it loose a bit with a love interest and fellow salesman John C. Reilly at a convention. A small, independent movie, but funny nonetheless. I loved the characters of the other insurance agents, played by Reilly and Isaiah Whitlock Jr.

Horrible Bosses – Charlie Day’s character is somewhat irritating at times with his constant high-pitched voice. Some funny moments, particularly with Kevin Spacey (as Jason Bateman's boss). Not quite as funny as I thought going in, and definitely not theater-worthy, but worth a rental.

3 Idiots - This movie is very long (2hr45min) and has English subtitles, but it is well worth the viewing. It’s the story of 3 friends from an engineering school in India. Two of them set out to find their long lost friend 10 years later and through a series of long flashbacks, their time at school is recounted. I thought the acting was great, there are sad parts and funny parts, and a twist at the end that, all in all, make this a must-see for me. I'd probably watch it again, which I never do (except for Shawshank and A Few Good Men).

btw - while watching Unknown about 1/3 in I thought to myself, "This movie should be called The Bourne Fugitive" and I swear not a minute later my wife said out loud virtually the same thing.

Handy: I know your general tastes in movies, and "The Kids..." had a lot of fodder for someone if they didn't like the movie. I'm guessing the same reasons you and I liked it would be the exact same reasons one would not like it. I just put you in the latter.

And Slappy: Haven't seen any of the Bourne movies...yet. Still working on that.

I know, I know...

It was one of those things that I always forgot about when the brick'n'mortar movie stores were still around, and when I joined Netflix, there were so many more better (theoretically) movies that I wanted to see before the Bourne movies, especially pre-1980 movies that I never found before in the BM stores. Suggestions and newer movies happened, and the Bourne movies got lost in the mix. On my list, just haven't gotten to them yet.

Saw Troll Hunter at an art house. Not for everyone, but I'd recommend it as a campy, in places actually pretty creepy, Blaire Witch type movie.
