Re: New/Rented Movies : Pixar actually made a bad movie

He is a good actor. Most people know him from Good Will Hunting and being Bootstrap Bill in the Pirates movies.

Oh yeah, remember GWH now. I only have seen the first Pirates, and only once, so I don't remember much about that movie. It was okay, that's about all I remember. And Keira.

I know he's been in a ton of movies, though.

Well, he isn't in the first one so your memory isn't too bad.

Yay for me!

I think the next movie I might see in theaters is Bad Ass starring Danny Trejo, just because. Otherwise maybe a third viewing of "Dragon Tattoo." There's a couple things that BPH, bbdl, and now I are wondering about. Tiny details/foreshadowing things.

I didn't realize that Robin Wright played Erika Berger. Her appearance has changed a lot.

Scarlet: no love for Skolsgard (sp?) as Martin? BPH and I agree the American version was better than the Swedish one with that character.
The American version was better than the Swedish version in every way. Every actor and actress is better, the production value was better, the writing was better, the score was better, the cinematography was better. Better in every way. The Swedish version was a ****ty made for TV movie compared to the American version, which is Oscar worthy.

She looked horrible.

Finished watching Contagion. I need to go wash my hands. A lot. And use hand sanitizer. And never go to Asia.

I mentioned that to BPH, especially since I just saw her in "The Conspirator" (good movie, she does a great job in it). I didn't even recognize her, and "TC" just came out in the past year.

BBDL: I disagree: some aspects in the storytelling in the Swedish version were better, IMO. The whole "same result, different route" thing. Not everything, but some. Overall? I'd go American. And remember, the director's cut of the Swedish is a bit different than the American one. Delves more into the subplots.

48 Hours is on. Love that movie. It's so dated!! Typewriters, dial phones. Hee! And some old school Eddie Murphy. Classic!

You realize that many of this crowd just thought to themselves, "Dial phones? Huh?" ;)

One or two things in the Swedish movie were better, and I liked Noori Rapace as Lisbeth a lot (Rooney Mara had a different interpretation of Lisbeth - I liked her, but I'd have to see both again to figure out who I liked more.) Totally agreed on Skarsgard being a hell of a Martin, though I think they overdid him a little too much in the beginning.

Neither film quite stayed with the book in certain aspects, though I liked the Swedish one (the first half or so) for presenting it a bit more slowly, like the book. The American one definitely nailed the oppressiveness of a Swedish small town in winter though, and added a few more plot points. The Swedish version seemed like it got pressed for time in the last third and just wrapped it up, whereas the American one thoroughly wrapped things up - much more quickly than the book, which I understand but regret a bit - while leaving the viewer with the impression that some things (Lisbeth's relationship with Mikael) were open to interpretation.

Plot points that we were discussing (whited-out):

Brenthoven pointed out that there are only two people who Lisbeth greets with "hey hey" - Palmgren and Mikael. Hey, the only two males in her life that have ever treated her with respect and not judged her. Nice catch.

When Mikael was at Martin's with his gf Liv, and Martin got up to close the door because of a gust of wind... that didn't sound like wind to me. Brent disagrees, but draw your own conclusions about which door he was shutting.

Lisbeth in Swedish was kinda hot. American? Notsomuch. But I defer to the book. She's not supposed to be hot. She's supposed to be as meh as possible. American version: win.

There was a point or two that the American accelerated, but that would fall under "same result, different route" action. Not the nuances. Major points. The guardian, I'm looking at you.

And I appreciate the American Lisbeth more, given what I heard from the book-readers. This is regarding the hotness/sexuality of Lisbeth.

True, Rapace was kind of too attractive, but Mara was almost too unappealing, if you see what I mean. The way Stieg Larsson wrote her seemed to suggest she had unintentional Lolita-like qualities in addition to her other Asperger's Syndrome tendencies, and neither one quite nailed it imo.

The way Bjurman went after her in the American version was... not what I was expecting either, especially in his comportment after the second assault. I hope there are a second and third movie, because I'd like to see how that character develops with some of the information that the second and third books contain.

Mara did her job then. ;)

Just saying.

Re: New/Rented Movies : Pixar actually made a bad movie

Meh, to each their own. Maybe it's a good thing that I don't find her attractive in that way? :p :o

I'm thankful that I didn't find Mara attractive. I do have some issues on finding Noomi attractive. :o (note: NOT mentally. She's batsh* nuts)

Re: New/Rented Movies : Pixar actually made a bad movie

I'm not convinced. In my opinion, the new version is so much better than the Swedish one, they can't even be compared.

From what I've seen and heard, there are plusses in all versions: Swedish, American, book.

Re: New/Rented Movies : Pixar actually made a bad movie

Just watched Warrior with a few buddies tonight, great movie but am I the only one to think the camera work in most of the non-fighting scenes is below amateur hour level? It just seemed really, really like home-movie like. Didn't take away from the film IMO, but was kind of annoying.
