To Be Or Not To Be

This was the first time I was utterly underwhelmed by a Mel Brooks film - even Anne Bancroft didn't save it (though I previously had no idea she could sing). Seemed like it wrestled with being either a comedy or a drama, but did not fit the blended realm of 'dramaedy' either.

Just went to World's End.

Really liked it. Even better than Shaun of the Dead.

One Wonderful Sunday (1947; Japanese movie by Akira Kurosawa)

An ex-soldier and his fiancee, who are poor, spend a Sunday together in post-war Japan.

Really solid movie. The two themes (hope/having dreams, and achieving happiness despite being poor) still ring true today, given how those themes are presented in this movie. I really liked it.

No Way Out (1950)

Pretty good black & white flick (ironic, given the subject matter). Sidney Portier plays a young, black doctor assigned to the prison ward of the county hospital, Richard Widmark plays the virulently racist survivor of a pair of robbing brothers shot by the cops during a chase, who accuses Portier's character of murdering his brother when he was administering a spinal tap and refuses to allow an autopsy (the main plot point for most of the movie). Linda Darnell, in a role that pretty much mirrored her personal life, is the brooding, troubled ex-wife of the dead brother, and ex-mistress of Widmark's character. The film depicts a lot of the racial tension and politics of the day, including the inevitable race riot just before the climax and resolution. I was pleasantly surprised that TCM aired it unedited, as there were several instances of the n-word, which would've been common in the time period.

I give it a solid A-.

It was followed by a recent interview with Kim Novak and an airing of Vertigo, so TCM did pretty well last night.

Drunken Angel (1948)
Yakuza guy goes to doc for bullet wound. TB could be in play, after examination. Strong stance against the Yakuza, and while I have not read into it, I'd be surprised if Akira Kirosawa (director) wasn't threatened in some way. That anti-Yakuza. Toshiro Mifune is outstanding of course. That is all that needs to be said.

Since you guys are watching all of these old classics...

Watched Fast Times @ Ridgemont High tonight with the freshman son. :D

He actually liked it. Especially Spicoli and I assume Phoebe Cates & Jennifer Jason Leigh. ;)

I thought it was pretty dull - haven't seen it since when I saw it WAY back in the day. At the time, thought it was about the funniest thing ever. Much like Caddy Shack or Animal House, it just seems dated and doesn't quite hold up.

Movies like Superbad just crush it now, but I explained to him that 30 years ago, this was an edgy and funny movie.

I'm glad he liked it though and can now join the ranks that have seen it. Rite of passage...

Caddyshack and Animal House have both held up for me personally, but que sera sera. :)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Me too. And Trading Places. I would watch any of those three any time they're on.

I know many who agree with you all on those movies.

For whatever reason, they just don't do it for me anymore. To each their own, of course.

We tried to watch Blazing Saddles a few weeks back and the boy eventually just got up and said he was done with this weird movie. To be honest, I couldn't finish it either.

Now you're just being ridiculous.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

My curiosity finally got me to watch Pitch Perfect.

Honestly, I really liked it. It was like Christopher Guest directing a Bring It On-storyline. Definitely a bit different than I expected. Of course, all the music numbers could have been done away with, but then there's really no story I suppose. ;) They really could have shortened them up, though. Don't need to see the WHOLE performance.

As for a couple of the characters, the Asian group member's lines here friggin' hysterical, but Fat Amy's lines were either funny as hell or "Huh.....oh I get it, but......yeah."

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I made it through 15 minutes of That's My Boy.

And I have Blazing Saddles recorded right now. :)

That's 15 more minutes than I will ever spend considering watching that movie.

Dogs Of War (1980)

Decent movie about some mercs hired to overthrow an African dictator. Stars Walken, hence my interest in it to begin with (although it also has Tom Berenger and Ed O'Neill, and the guy who plays Latrine in Top Secret! :D ).

I don't understand.

Zack And Miri Make A Porno

Entertaining, however being a big Kevin Smith/ViewAskewniverse fan, it definitely affected how I saw those actors in this movie. Randall will always be Randall and Jay will alway be Jay to me. Dante makes a bit appearance, too, but it really wasn't noticeable. Honestly, if he could have tied this into the VA movie world, it might even have been better.
