Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I know I'm late to the game, but In Bruges had what is probably my favorite ending to a movie of all time. Near perfect.

Prob about 5 years for me (although haven't checked to see if the Blockbuster off of 494/42nd is still open lately). Just browsing, maybe finding a possible gem, taking that chance, etc. Going to the video store was an adventure!

Oh man... I think that's an experience that we as humans should all still get to have. It's pure joy when they had one last copy of the new release in and you got it. This was coupled with the feelings of complete disappointment when all the copies were rented. At least when you were a kid, these could be relatively strong emotions.

I remember biking up to Video Update as a kid (it was a HUGE deal when our parents allowed us to have our own account AND let us bike to the store) and picking out a movie and a game. Play the game for a few hours. Go to a friend's house with it and play it. Later that night we would watch the movie while eating dinner in the living room or over a big bowl of popcorn.

I know Redbox is similar, but I'll tell you what, it's just not the same. YOu can't run to the back where all the new released were held and quickly parse the entire row of cases looking across eight shelves of the same movie. *sigh* As much as I hated it sometimes, it's something I actually miss.

It was slow getting there (it's pretty dry even on dry-and-dark-comedy standards), but it does come to quite an excellent finish.

On a similar note: I was really late to it, but I fan ally saw Prometheus. I get that the antagonism of the Engineers is left ambiguous most likely for sequel reasons, but in this movie it just felt arbitrary. As if they were the bad guys because its a movie and therefore they are bad guys. That and the slightly cartoonish nature of most of the action (as opposed to Alien's sense of dread) were my only complaints.

Nailed it.

Some movies on tonight on tv that I've seen dozens of times, and still like.

Kill The Irishman. Will always be a fave of mine. Personal Top 20 (which is different than my "real" top 20 which is based on actual social impact/cinematic greatness). It gets you involved with the characters; rooting for certain ones, etc. Much like an old classic western.

Lethal Weapon 4. Simply because of Jet Li. First American movie, first villain he played. And he nailed it. This caused me to look up some of his other movies since I had never heard of him before (and before he started doing stuff like Romeo Must Die and The Expendables franchise, both of which are worth watching). Fist Of Legend, while a remake, is a personal favorite, and has one of the best "kung fu" fights I've seen due to realism (blindfold fight).

Con-Air. Guilty pleasure, I admit. So ridiculous. All the big name actors do their roles well. Can't help the ludicrous script. Oh well.

Taken 2

Wasn't a bad movie. I guess I enjoyed it, but what new ground was covered?

Seemed like the same movie only with an older, slightly less convincing as a tough guy, Liam Neeson.

Meh

But RADE!!!!!

Truthfully, it just added some HGH and some 'roids, and ran with the same concept. It was completely ridiculous, as opposed to being somewhat ridiculous of the first "Taken." ;)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Love the dialogue during the car chase...

Dad: Drive faster.

Daughter: I can't!

Dad: Yes you can!

Dad: Drive faster.

Daughter: I can't!

Dad: Yes you can!

Dad: Drive faster.

Daughter: I can't!

Dad: Yes you can!

Dad: Drive faster.

Daughter: I can't!

Dad: Yes you can!

EDIT: Car chases, in every movie, are just lame. What hasn't been done at this point? And they always go on way too long. BORING.

I feel the same way and also about The Rock.

I have Taken 2 in my queue but am in no hurray to move it up the ladder.

I kept thinking, in accent...

"I don't often set up elaborate plans involving torture, bribery and kidnapping, but when I do..."

The Rock, also. :o

And car chases? For modern movies, Ronin is the answer.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Won't argue that, but nothing from 1998 should be called "modern." :p:D

I'm thinking relatively, like Bullitt, Gone In 60 Seconds (orig), Vanishing Point, Dirty Mary Crazy Larry (FTR, all in my cue, haven't seen yet) are not modern. Modern, to me, are the movies created in my movie-viewing lifetime.

Edit: Death Proof had a HELL of a car chase at the end.

The more I think about it, the less I like Prometheus. I'm still trying to figure out what the deal is with the android David. What was his angle with the xenomorphs? I'm fine without an answer there if we can establish why Rooney Mara and Charlize Theron are both so stupid as to try to outrun a rolling downed spaceship instead of just moving out of it's path.

Humans were created, he was created by humans, he wanted to play around with creation as well. That and he was probably a little ****ed at how much of a dick that one guy was to him.

Panic, and the possibility for a big scene, even if it doesn't make much sense from a spot without a big space ship rolling towards you.

Flight

Really solid movie. Denzel is great as usual. The character he plays....really layered, IMO. Definitely recommend it.
