Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I wish we still had a video store nearby - I miss bringing the kids there, picking one for the parents and one for them, some popcorn, etc. I bet it's been at least three years that an actual video rental place was anywhere near our house.

Prob about 5 years for me (although haven't checked to see if the Blockbuster off of 494/42nd is still open lately). Just browsing, maybe finding a possible gem, taking that chance, etc. Going to the video store was an adventure!

Even with "very good," I still lean to "great." I had somewhat high expectations (entertainment only, not great cinematic experience) and this movie surpassed them.

I won't argue with that.

Every Friday after school, the boys make us take them. Older one picks out an xBox game, younger one a wii game or movie. Then if we have a free night we get movies, cotton candy, popcorn...

Like I said, this will disappear altogether in the next several years. Pity.

It's with all my might I don't post that Walken scene. The quotes are so hilarious.

I hear ya. Don't do it though!

Not only the quotes but the delivery - by BOTH actors.

The scene in the nursing home lobby with Woody and Walken was crackling intense too. Had no idea what was going to happen there.

Yep. Now, if you "rent" a movie, you can stop it, not worry about returning it to avoid the fee, etc. It's risk free. Terrible. That means more bad movies. When you went to a video store....you invested! You had to choose wisely!

That was indeed the puzzling one. It could have gone 5 different ways. Just spitballin' on the number of results. ;)

Hence the smartphone with Amazon and IMDB at the ready. ;)

Turning the tables in my favor. Cheating maybe, but I'm busy in life now and have got no time for horrible movies.

But some horrible movies are so great! The classics: Reefer Madness, Freaks. The currents: Butter, Bernie. The modern awesomeness: Rocky IV, Under Siege, The Stoned Age....

If you're going to reference "horrible" movies, you should actually list some movies that are horrible.

All of those are bad, in a good way.

Under Siege? Who doesn't believe that a stripper can become competent with military firearms after 15 minutes under fire? And Tommy Lee and Mr. Busey are AWESOME in this.

And Rocky IV is a cold war era ****ing classic. There's nothing at all "horrible" about Rocky IV. Bad? Cheesy? Dated? Sure. Not horrible though.

Now Rocky V? ****ing horrible. Unwatchable.

Fine. Plan 9 From Outer Space and Manos: The Hands Of Fate. How's that? Or The Swamp Thing?

Rocky IV is awesomely horrible. Sorry, but that's the way it is. :p

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Finally saw "Silver Linings Playbook" this weekend. It was OK, although pretty much every little plot twist was a little too obvious. I did like the scenes about the Eagles and their fans. Those were spot on. And for you nit-pickers: Jennifer Lawrence mentions that the Phillies beat the Dodgers in the playoffs during one of their dates. Problem was, the movie took place in 2007, and that series was played in 2008. The Phils lost 3 straight to Colorado in 2007.

Also watched 4 movies on my flight to and from China last month:

"No Strings Attached": Not especially funny, but it does have Natalie Portman in her underwear, so not all bad.

"The Perks of Being a Wallflower": I loved it, but then again, I was a geek in High School, too.

"Trouble with the Curve": Meh. It's time for Eastwood to hang 'em up. He only plays one character any more.

"Ruby Sparks": A chick flick, but fun.

Bernie: I watched the first half hour, and it just bored me to tears. I quit after that.

I also watched "Taken 2" on someone else's screen while eating dinner. Beautiful cinematography and I could figure out what was going on without the dialogue. I think it was better that way.
