New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Rampart - quite good albeit somewhat predictable. Several good acting performances made up for the cliches.

The main point of my review much earlier in this thread: I think if they polished it up a little, and touched up the story itself, it could have been really good.

I think you and I are really close on what we thought of the movie.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Battleship: Incredibly stupid entertainment. For better or (mostly) worse, it was everything you would expect a clone of a Michael Bay movie to be.

Honestly, one of my favorite movies of 2012. The opening scene with the burrito, the old-timers coming from nowhere, them actually playing Battleship, a man beating up an alien with his prosthetic leg!!!! Freaking perfect movie.

The Five Year Engagement: Hadn't realized that the wife had already seen this, so it was left to me to watch while she went to the gym. As much as I wanted to enjoy this as it was going along, I just got sick of it and switched to soccer for a while, then went to clean the fireplace. The of-course-a-pompous-Californian-wrote-this moment that was the straw that broke the camel's back? The idea of a bunch of people living in Ann Arbor laughing uncontrollably at the idea of a chef moving from California to Michigan. BECAUSE OF COURSE THEY DON'T HAVE GOOD PLACES TO EAT WHEN YOU AREN'T ON THE COAST!!! Seriously, California, **** you.
Yeah, the town I now call home (and love) played the villain in that movie. I was unimpressed. It had a few funny moments, but was predictable and not worth wasting an hour of time on. Although, since it was filmed in Ann Arbor, it was cool seeing all the local places, and finding out why my friend saw Jason Segel in a pink bunny suit during filming.
Very much the opposite of Answer This a movie about bar trivia where Ann Arbor plays the role of Eden.

I enjoyed it, but then I agree with the notion that voluntarily moving from the Bay Area to Ann Arbor is insane.

Edit to add: Saw Movie 43 this past weekend. Paid $3 for two tickets because we had AMC passes, and even that was probably too much. The Kieran Culkin/Emma Stone and Jason Sudeikis/Justin Long bits were pretty good, but a lot of it was horrendous.

How bad does a movie have to be to make someone voluntarily change the channel away from it to watch soccer. Jeez. I've seen some bad movies, but none that have plummetted to that level.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Just watched Slap Shot with the 14 year old for the first time.

About half way through he says "What's the plot of this supposed to be?" :D

He liked it and is old enough now that he got all the jokes, if not the subtleties of the plot - such as it is.

Haven't seen it in 10 years or more and it looked gorgeous on the big screen. ****, I miss the 70s.

The Babymakers. Decent enough rental. Done by Broken Lizard so you that tells you a lot.

Rounders. I don't remember finding this movie so ****-poor the first time I watched it. Godawful in fact. Terrible acting, terrible dialogue, it was campyish at best but they clearly weren't going for that.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Saw Seven Psychopaths this weekend and it was somewhere between very good and great.

Guess it's done by the same guy who did In Bruges (which was great) and I can see a similar style, if not plot.

Fantastic character performances by Woody Harrelson and Sam Rockwell. Christopher Walken continues to get more incredible (he's so great in this) and even Tom Waits turned in a good performance.

I'm a huge fan of Waits' music, but he's usually pretty wooden in movie roles. This time, I liked him.

Wife and 14 year old really liked it too.

Looking forward to this one. It's sitting on my coffee table as I type. Probably will watch it tomorrow.

Hard to Hold from 1984 with Rick Springfield on right now. It's unbeLIEVable this was a real movie. I can't turn away!

It only gets a 7.4 in IMDB, so there's a number of people who didn't connect with it, but I thought it was a good time. I'd probably give it an 8 to an 8.5, so I'm not too far off I guess.

I never pay attention to the IMDB ratings.

I only look while in the video store and I'm unfamiliar with a movie.

If the ratings are really low, I steer clear.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

In the what?

This. I don't know where the closest one to me is, other than Wal-Marts, Best Buys, and Redboxes.

Edit: Or the library, duh.

We've got a Family Video about a mile from my house. Good selection and can't remember a time that I couldn't get the new release that I wanted.

I still like to go walk the aisles and find a movie for the night. It's like living a nostalgic event as I realize that these stores probably won't exist in 5-10 years.

Yeah! Technology. Eventually, we'll never have to leave the house for anything.

I'm old enough, as I'm sure you two are also, to remember when these types of stores first opened. Beta or VHS? That was the question.

I've seen so many that are contrasting with the IMDB ratings, hence my ignoring them. Of course, I have odd tastes.

Did see Seven Psychopaths tonight. I lean more toward "great" than "good." The little things of Woody's character are awesome (it's almost like the similar character he had in "No Country For Old Men" with seemingly random reasonings that are somehow relevant, something along the lines of that). The second to last final scene with Walken, the dialogue between the characters...I was laughing my arse off.

Yes, you probably should have a bit of a twisted sense of humor for this movie, but I found it to be hilarious. And is it just me, or does Colin Farrel play the smart-but-dumb guy to perfection?

Edit: I always went to Title Wave. Big selection, no censoring like Blockbuster, and they always had the best "worst" movies available. Yes, my friends and I would go to the (not kidding on the section title) "Bad Bad Bad Bad Cinema" section, and try and find the worst movie to watch.

To be fair, if you're referring to me, I said very good to great, not just good.

Quibble ended.

I loved the second to last final scene also along with the final scene between Woody and the dude with the f. g. (Trying to avoid spoiler)

Both had me in stitches.

Definitely a movie for those with a twisted sense - agree with you there.

The 2nd to final scene reminded me of the scene in "Suicide Kings" (coincidentally also starring Walken, although he isn't really involved in the scene):

Charlie Barret: The gun again. Can't you guys just play nice?
Lono Veccio: Drop the gun, a*hole.
Max Minot: [finally fed up] Why don't you drop your gun?
Lono Veccio: I don't drop my f*ing gun, okay?
Max Minot: [in a mocking voice] Okay.

Even with "very good," I still lean to "great." I had somewhat high expectations (entertainment only, not great cinematic experience) and this movie surpassed them.
