Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Were there any big surprises from the Golden Globes tonight? I turned on the show while channel surfing during the commercial of the show I had been watching. I had no idea it was even airing tonight. Aren't they usually in February?

No, the Globes are always in mid-January. Argo winning Best Picture and Ben Affleck for Best Director were total surprises given the Academy's decision to not even nominate him for Best Director. Should make the Oscars very interesting. Quentin Tarantino winning was also a surprise as well.

Argo was surprising. Even Ben Affleck had the "Are you effing kidding me?" look on his face.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

That was awesome, because I had the same look on my face. I am over Will Ferrell, and never particularly liked Kristen Wiig.

Also, Jeremy Irons' voice is still awesome.

Ehh, I liked it. But then I also liked Garth and Katt on SNL, which probably makes my opinion irrelevant then.

Jodie Foster is a lesbian and likes to ramble on incoherently for 15 minutes.
I thought everyone already knew that, it's been one of those worst-kep-secret things for a long time now. Is that not the case? Not the incoherent rambling, but the lesbian thing, that's the part that's been known.

I thought so as well.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Is it common for the majority of movies nominated for Best Picture by the AA to be released toward the end of the year? Amour (Dec 19) Life of Pi (Nov 21) Argo (Aug 31) Lincoln (Nov 9) Beasts OTSW (Jan 12 the lone exception) Silver Linings (Nov 16) Django (Dec 25) Zero Dark (Dec 19) and Le Mis (Dec 25).

Perhaps this is the norm and it's the first time I noticed...

Yes, they want the recent buzz, they want to be fresh in the minds of those nominating, voting.

That absolutely makes sense but that's not why I asked (no snark intended). I just don't recall having seen so few nominees before the awards are given and I always see most movies via rental, yet most of these don't even have a DVD release date.

And for the public to be able to go out and still see their movie in the theater when they hear about all the nominations.

Saw Django last night. Enjoyed it. What I expect from Tarantino: interesting plot, good soundtrack, large dead body count, some humor, and cursing...lots of cursing.
The theater near me does $5 admission on Wednesdays...it was packed.

American Beauty was a summer release and did so-so to not-so-great at the box office, then after its Oscar nod it was re-released and did good business. This was back when it still took 9 mos to the year for a movie to release on DVD.

Has anyone else seen Killing Them Softly yet?

I haven't but I want to. The reason is was pushed back was they didn't want to compete for awards for "The Master" (that Phillip Seymour Hoffman/scientology movie).
