Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

What's this? Is this a special promotion for the Hobbit movie if you see it at specific times or if you go to it in general? I rarely go to a movie during its opening weekends these days, but these nine minutes interest me.
I think it's @ every showing. There was nothing in the presser I saw (and now can't find) that said it was a special event.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I thought the same about Sally Field.

I was surprised to hear she was in it, but I thought she was great as Mary Todd. I don't recall her being in a blockbuster since Forrest Gump and (one of my favorite childhood comedies) Mrs. Doubtfire.

She did some TV show on CBS for a few years with Anne Heche. I don't recall the title since I never watched it, but I do remember seeing commercials for the show.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Was reading some of the (very few) negative reviews. The two most common objections seem to be that the film should've focused more on Lincoln's life and career as a whole, which is laughable. They could make four, three-hour volumes or a five-season cable drama, and it still wouldn't cover everything. The others griped about Spielberg's political hagiography of Lincoln, who was indeed anti-slavery and pro-union, but not necessarily pro-interracial society. Personally, I think you have to take most blockbuster films about historical figures with a half grain of salt, since they almost always portray their protagonists as perfect humans (and this film did show some of Lincoln's faults as a husband, even if it did sanctify his political career a bit). Focus instead on the performances.

Sally Field was also the Mom on Brothers and Sisters on ABC.

No two historians agree on Lincoln and his leanings. His speeches were so back and forth about it no one really knows. I thought Spielberg was fine in that regard.

I liked the little touches in "Lincoln," like having him have a blanket wrapped around him often (IIRC, due to his skinniness, he was often cold, no body fat, along with other reasons), and the fact they addressed his...for lack of a better word, "unstable" home life.

And this hasn't been said yet, but Tommy Lee (and even Sally Field) could/should be faves for supporting actor/actress. Tommy Lee especially.

Yeah, I really think that this movie has the Best Lead Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress wrapped up.

Unless Hopkins (Hitchcock) upsets DDL, as we discussed off-board. I reallllly want to see that movie now, to compare the acting.

Agree. I know there are a few other movie award groups or whatever that also do best cast or something similar. I could easily see Lincoln winning for that too. There were so many great performances: James Spader as Bilbo, David Stratharin as Seward, David Costabile as Ashley and Michael Stuhlbarg as Yeaman were a few that stood out for me.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

The New World. Obviously this is several years old, but just godawful. The constant narrative (which when used right can be a great add) was overbearing and Farrell mumbled the entire way through, it looked like something you'd see on SyFy, and there were way too many scenes with Smith and Pocahontas staring into each other's eyes. Painful one of the worst movies I've never watched.

the cast was just crazy...I mean they had Joseph Gordon-Leavitt playing Robert Lincoln for crying out loud! I think DDL and Field are locks for the Oscars. Seeing as the Academy loves to screw over Spielberg though (the list of movies he made that didnt win Best Picture is astounding) my guess is that is where you will see Hitchcock or Argo or something win.

Okay, I'm not sure that my fears of these films being too cartoonish are going to be too off the mark. On the other hand, this still looks like it'll be a fun movie to watch, and the Gollum scene is going to be fantastic:

Of those, the only one that troubles me is the goblin town scene. Shades of King Kong, but like you said, should be a fun movie to watch. Not sure why they made these goblins look different than the Moria ones from the Fellowship.

The rest of the scenes feel like the book to me.

Still excited.

True. If nothing else, I should temper my expectations by noting that making certain parts of The Hobbit feel cartoony and childish would make sense, given that The Hobbit is a children's book (while the LOTR books were not necessarily so).

Great example? The dwarves falling into Bag End in the first clip. It's silly kids stuff, but it's straight from the book.

The Incineration rider in the contract was very funny. Wish I hadn't seen it yet although I knew there'd be spoilers in those clips - can't resist.

That part is made up, but it fits perfectly and is hilarious.

Most excited, we are, yessssssssss, precious!

Randomly came across this on FaceBook today... I must say, my interest is peaked based on the trailer... Seems like an interesting documentary....
