Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

The Boromir character itself is great. He is tempted, but is denied. He then more than makes up for it by sacrificing himself. FRODO doesn't even show that strength.

And yes, Bean was incredible. He nailed it, and like you said, went above what the book asked of that role.

Frodo fails in the end.

My wife claims that Sam is the true hero and I tend to agree although it takes both of them and Gollum's unwilling/unintentional aid in the end.

If there's one thing Sean Bean knows how to do, its how to die well.

The second trilogy failed miserably because the chemistry was not there and the individual performances were wooden and completely forgettable.

"I love the water." :D

Just watched Sugar - really liked it. Definitely makes you think about Latin American baseball players in a different light.

This review from Netflix made me LOL -

"This movie just doesnt seem very inspirational sports movie as many are for me. I for one am not a baseball fan but these films often have a good story. An example is Blind Side that I really loved. That movie had plenty of other stars to back it up like Sandra Bullock. This one had none. Also there were way too many subtitles that made it look like a foriegn film. Dub whenever possible. In the end the character has to find his way back to baseball. I thought that earlier in the movie there may have been a developing love interest but alas the chance was missed. Only for diehard fans of baseball but not particularly anybody else."

I can practically see the angry finger waving! no stars! you should dub (OMG SUBTITLES!?!?)! no romantic interest! boo hiss! get off my lawn!
maybe she should have watched Blind Side again instead. :p hey, I liked that movie too. but I don't need every other movie to be exactly like it.
and DUBBING? REALLY? people want that?!?!?
That is hilarious.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Still going to be disappointed if a lot of the action scenes have the logic of a Rube Goldberg device, but who am I kidding, I'm going to see it opening weekend.

My kid's trying to talk me into the midnight screening. See, the wife would never do that, so back with the first trilogy it wasn't an option. Now that the boy is 14, he won't have to twist my arm too much...

Plus you get the first 9 minutes of the new Star Trek movie.

What's this? Is this a special promotion for the Hobbit movie if you see it at specific times or if you go to it in general? I rarely go to a movie during its opening weekends these days, but these nine minutes interest me.

So I finally saw The Muppets

Holly effing Christ please let me never hear Chris Cooper rap again.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

Took my younger son to "Rise of the Guardians" last night.

I LOVED this movie as did my wife and son.

I like a good animated kids movie, but good animated kids movies are few and far between, imo. Too many formula-based generic stories that basically go from one head shot to the next, expecting you to be entertained.

Not this one. Tons of heart, a good story with it's alternative take on the protagonists, great animation (Avatar-like in some parts - seriously), funny parts, character development and a certain level of magic (not to be corny) that very few movie makers (or anyone else) can put a finger on.

While walking out, I thought "This is how I felt with my kids at Disney World." Magic.

Well done.

EDIT: Oh yeah, and no songs!

If you can find Mr. Plinketts review of JJ's Star Trek watch it. Brilliant!!

Lincoln was decent. There was a little more political humor than I anticipated, or was alluded to in Dorris Kearns Goodwin's book (which I read last year). Obviously a little Hollywood license there.

I thought it was more than decent. It was as slow as I expected (and longer, too), but didn't affect the quality of the movie whatsoever. I was surprised at the amount of smaller-name actors in it, though (examples include, and yes, I'm going to use characters' names, Gale from Breaking Bad, Lane from Mad Men, the guy who played the herm/tranny in Sons Of Anarchy, etc).

I had very high expectations, and it delivered. But...without DDL that movie is unwatchable. With him the whole movie is excellent. It is, obviously, a movie that absolutely requires an amazing lead actor for it to work.

Which would be why they cast DDL...

They wanted Liam at first, but Liam thought the he was too old for the role once filming began. I agree they needed a strong lead actor, and to add to that, the actor needed to be versatile, not someone who is known more as an action guy or a comedy guy, etc.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Insert Random Retread Of A Plot

I didn't even recognize Tommy Lee Jones. He either porked out for that role, or wore a fat suit.
