Good movie
Into The Wild. I had no expectations about this one, but in the end was very impressed with the production. It was very well done on many levels, and to some degree poignant even if I came away feeling jaded toward the lead character.

I loved the soundtrack for that movie. Maybe even more than the movie.

She's Out Of My League

Decent movie. Some parts were hilarious, but the super overly cliched story (more specifically the Nice Guy character) bogged it down a little. And Krysten Ritter (Jesse's girlfriend in the tv show Breaking Bad) was great.

Now, about the Nice Guy character: Remember when you were introduced to the Nice Guy in movies past? It was pretty obvious what type of personality he had, that sort of thing. Why do all the NGs nowadays have to be so obviously over the top stumbling, stuttering, awkward morons? It's literally painful to watch them try to say and do anything. They all act like Michael Cera. It's horrible. We get it. He doesn't deserve the girl, but he gets her anyway. No need to shove his inability to function down our throats.

Pirates 4 is great if you like movies with no plot, identical action sequences to previous films in the series, and mailed-in performances from the main actors. Good Lord, what a crapfest.

Only person I ever like in those films is Depp. Otherwise I just hope for eye candy and a bit of action.

Usually it is:

1. Nice Guy does "deserve" Ideal Girl, but
2. [Shallow social convention] and/or his geekiness prevents him from functioning in front of her, until
3. Madcap twist makes him desirable, however
4. Not used to popularity, he briefly become Not Nice, then
5. The Fates arrange his dramatic comeuppance, and so
6. Nice Guy either gets Ideal Girl or grows beyond her and realizes Nice Girl was there all along.

Roll credits with hysterical staged outtakes.

This is the formula for 91% of all teen comedies (allowing for gender switches). Of the others, 8% are Coming of Age Roadtrip and 1% is Bittersweet Self Discovery Under Tragic Circumstances, in which hysterical staged outtakes are replaced by gradually building pop-profundity anthem by flash-in-the-pan female folk artist.

The movie is awesome, but yeah the character was an idiot who I had absolutely no sympathy for. If he walks a mile down river he most likely is able to cross...or if he brings more than a bag of rice...

I was also annoyed that he shut out his sister so completely. I was on board with the 'quest' and admired his willingness to abandon the silver spoon, but ultimately at what end do we completely shut ourselves off from those of our past? Even if I believe he would have eventually returned to that relationship, he had to have known his disappearance hurt her deeply.

btw, here is out of tune I can be when it comes to the media. I thought this movie was, "Into Thin Air" when I put it into my queue. :)

But I have to reiterate that I really did enjoy the movie and how it was filmed. It lacked gimmicks, didn't imho try to brand him a hero or some existential genius, and in a sense generated hope despite the knowledge he wasn't going to make it out alive. It would be interesting to read commentary from those that met him along the way if any exists.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Jason Segel (Forgetting Sarah Marshall, How I Met Your Mother, Freaks and Geeks, etc.) wrote the screenplay so I think there's hope for it.

And Amy Adams is in it. That's always a bonus. However, I still have my doubts. Disney...Muppets...together...

Edit: So I saw a blurb about an upcoming movie called "Horrible Bosses," and Jennifer Aniston plays a, get this, horrible boss who sexually harasses one of her employees.

Um, I wouldn't be complaining about that if my boss was her. That's just a major plot hole. ;)

You know how lots of Disney movies (and kids movies in general) have gotten sort of ADD-afflicted and have all sorts of terrible "wacky" characters and terrible slapstick? It was always there before, but ever since Robin Williams was The Genie in Aladdin, it's just gotten turned up to 11? Yeah, that's what I'm worried about them doing with this new Muppets movie.

(I hereby propose that this phenomenon be labeled "The Genie Effect")
