New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Would those be the same critics that gave Fast Five a 79% on rottentomatoes? http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/fast_five/

Critics are stupid :D
They are. It's probably 50/50 on whether I agree with them on movies, as a whole (I don't pay attention to a certain critic, such as "so and so has my tastes, so I back him on reviews, and such). I hear buzz from them to perk my ears, then rely on people I know to chime in (or a more "real," as in not a pro critic, population) for a more accurate review.

Maybe the 83% for Thor loves crappy over the top movies? Example: Conan the Barbarian (with Ah-nold). Some love it because it's so bad. Some hate it because it's so bad. Some realized they never should be subjected to that movie just because (yours truly included). ;)

Want another movie? "Grindhouse" (the double-feature). I thought it was brilliantly done. Others didn't get the bit. Others got the bit and didn't like it. Still others didn't get the bit and loved it. See where I'm going with this? :p

I probably won't see The Green Lantern. Not because I know it will suck, but because it is ridiculous that the ring chose friggin Van Wilder to help save the Universe.

Conan also gets better over time because of its influence -- watching it now is also to watch and enjoy the thirty-five layers of references that come after it. There are plenty of other movies that were really only so-so when they came out but now have this great "body of work" behind them that makes them "classics" (Enter the Dragon, Rocky, any spaghetti western, etc).

Everyone has their tastes. (For example I don't think it will suck at all) My buddy won't see Captain America because he can't stand the idea of Johnny Storm (or the idiot from Not Another Teen Movie) becoming the Super Soldier and First Avenger. Since I like Cap and Chris Evans I actually might see it.

Unless they are making a film about Thor of the Asgaard and SG-1 is in it, I really have no interest :D

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Well, my thoughts on Thor. Overall, a pretty solid flick. They managed to get most of all the comic story in it without making it too complicated. had a good flow for it being two hours, but I thought that they could have added a little more to it perhaps. Would have liked to have seen a little more of them at the bar drinking, fighting and making their ancestors proud, but that might have just been a little messy perhaps. Also, they didn't throw in anything cheesy, like trying to work in Thunderstruck or the Immagrants song into the soundtrack as well, as they both would have been tempting for the Studio hacks to want them in there. Don't think they really would have fit personally, short of background music at the bar perhaps.

Same, an enjoyable if somewhat predictable movie. Some really nice visuals for space and Asgard.

I'm really glad they didn't have Thor pick up a bunch of stupid Earth phrases. Ya know, to show just how much he's changed.

Yeah, Asgard really did look like it would be the main crib of the gods there. Most of it was green screened, but still pretty cool to see.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

It was dreary and rainy today, until the evening, so had a bit of a movie marathon:

My Left Foot:
No one can touch Daniel Day-Lewis. No one. If you combined Bale and Hopkins then you might out act DDL one time out of ten. Great story, and amazing performance of Irish writer/artist Christy Brown, who had cerebral palsy, and could only control his left foot.

The Basketball Diaries:
This was okay. Based on a true story, etc etc. DiCaprio was okay, same with Wahlberg. While entertaining enough, it just didn't have that extra oomph that you expect in a story like this. Yeah, I know, SOR-RY if the guy didn't have that extra Holy Sh* experience, but the way you tell the story does matter, too. ;)

Paranormal Activity:
Better version of The Blair Witch Project, I admit, although it took a little longer to really hit its stride. This again helps prove that the scariest/creepiest movies are done with shadows and sounds (Halloween, Blair Witch, etc) than with on-screen violence. If you get creeped out easily, I will say this is NOT the movie for you if you want to sleep at night.

Looking forward to "My Blue Valentine" arriving this week (released on Netflix this Tue).

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

"Hasta la vista, baby."

See, now that worked in T2, hell, the Terminator was totally reprogrammed and taking orders from Johnny Conner. That made sense there. In Thor, that wouldn't have made sense at all, as hell, Thor has pretty much always talked more like a Shakespearean actor than anybody else, despite being on Marvel Universe Earth for quite a few years already.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

So a question regarding netflix, even though its tv related rather than movie related.

They just added Season 5 of Doctor Who to instant streaming - if I goto the series page on my computer I can stream it fine. However, if I try to stream it through the wii, it says the season is DVD only (although that's an update in and of itself, since before the wii menu didn't even show the season 5 episodes on the list at all)...

is this something that will probably correct itself in a day or two when they update the wii streaming service again? Anyone know?

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

No. No, it didn't. I was agreeing with Foxton: picking up cutesy local sayings like that is always really stupid.

I enjoyed Thor -- it was what it was. My wife thought it was the worst movie she's seen in years (and this from a person who could tolerate Knocked Up.)

I thoroughly approve of the idea that Thor would look, act and think exactly like David Lee Roth.

Finally saw Shutter Island. I expected a C and got a solid B, not bad at all.
