Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!
It was dreary and rainy today, until the evening, so had a bit of a movie marathon:
My Left Foot:
No one can touch Daniel Day-Lewis. No one. If you combined Bale and Hopkins then you might out act DDL one time out of ten. Great story, and amazing performance of Irish writer/artist Christy Brown, who had cerebral palsy, and could only control his left foot.
The Basketball Diaries:
This was okay. Based on a true story, etc etc. DiCaprio was okay, same with Wahlberg. While entertaining enough, it just didn't have that extra oomph that you expect in a story like this. Yeah, I know, SOR-RY if the guy didn't have that extra Holy Sh* experience, but the way you tell the story does matter, too.
Paranormal Activity:
Better version of The Blair Witch Project, I admit, although it took a little longer to really hit its stride. This again helps prove that the scariest/creepiest movies are done with shadows and sounds (Halloween, Blair Witch, etc) than with on-screen violence. If you get creeped out easily, I will say this is NOT the movie for you if you want to sleep at night.
Looking forward to "My Blue Valentine" arriving this week (released on Netflix this Tue).
