New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Insidious

I saw a screening in early March, I know one of the producers. I really like a good horror movie but often walk away disappointed. I thoroughly enjoyed Insisious. The lack of gore and elimination of "fake scares" (e.g. when the foreboding music plays it's for a reason) adds to the boding sense of doom. I think that the masses are going to like this movie, it's well done. The haunting concept here is different and it's refreshing. I was scared during the movie and some of the scenes still give me the shivers. It's easier in many ways (for me at least) to dismiss over the top gore versus the buildup of increasingly scary concepts in this film.
I enjoyed it but overall it was very meh. The actual scary parts were almost all in the first half of the movie and boiled primarily down to the ghosts jumping out and going "boo!" Some of which are very effective and creepy. That one outside the window, holy ****. The 3rd act and ending just killed any sense of dread or malice that was being built up..

My suggestion is to wait for video and watch late at night with all the lights off.

Good movie. MUCH better than I expected.

Nick Cage was even good in it. One of his better roles in awhile.

I must say, I like the R-rated comic book movies way more than I expected. Between Kick-arse and the Watchmen, I got enough enjoyment to offset the drivel that was Spiderman 3 and Superman Returns.

Too bad Batman won't go beyond PG-13.

Meant to post this on Friday, but, if any of you had any thoughts at all of going to see Your Highness... please don't do it.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Finally saw all of Road to Perdition last night. Tom Hanks makes an awesome, if conflicted, bad guy. Paul Newman was excellent too.

Hanna was beautiful. Completely mis-marketed, though. It's really a Euro-intellectual art movie. Everybody's going to go in thinking it's Salt 2 and come out thinking, WTF?

Awesome. I'm going to make it a point to go see it now, thanks.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

"The Woman in Black." looks sufficiently creepy from the first teaser. That is easy to do with weird kids-piano music and a few short clips, though. Also, I'll probably end up seeing Hesher. :D

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I have been watching "The Civil War" by Ken Burns one PBS...wow it is fantastic! :D

Scream 5, who was the 3rd killer in Scream 4? (There had to be, both of them were at Kirby's house which was rather far away but someone was killing people at Sidney's aunt's house.)

I liked it but I wish they wouldn't just use the characters day to day lives to just be a prelude to getting cut up within 10 seconds.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I am watching Terminator Salvation and I still like it. I dont get why some people hated it, lots of action, lots of machines destroying crap and Christian Bale swearing. I mean the only thing missing was Linda Hamilton ;)

Plus it had Michael Ironside...Michael Ironside friggin RULES! :D

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I watched Love and Other Drugs last night. Movie was OK, Anne Hathaway really hates clothes.

I just watched this last week as well. Basically, I called it "Anne Hathaway's b***s and Jake Gyllenhall's a*s". All told, it wasn't a bad movie.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Watched Ninja Assassin tonight (yay free HBO/Max weekends). Entertaining bloody ninja action as expected.

I had to see Love and Other Drugs in the theater with my parents. They chose, not knowing it was basically an Anne Hathaway's Boobs vehicle. Movie itself was boring, but Anne made it tolerable.
