Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I just went to Blockbuster and bought movies cheap! The highlights though are Sideways, Rescue Dawn and The Robocop Special Edition! :D

5 DVDs for 26 bucks...not too shabby :)

I should check that out. That's how I got many of my movies, is through (basically) clearance sales. Rescue Dawn is awesome. Zaughn (sp?) had that 1000 yard stare DOWN.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

That would be New Hope, MN own Steve Zahn ;) The Applebees on 42nd has a booth dedicated to him :p

Usually the sales at Blockbuster suck, but they have everything on sale for like 5 bucks...worth it if you ask me :)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Movies I watched this weekend that I liked:

High Crimes
Due Date
Unforgiven
Alpha Dog
Sa
lt (I foresee a sequel...2 Salty)

I didn't really enjoy 2012.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

The American. It felt like a quiet, understated version of the Bourne trilogy. I don't recall seeing much feedback on this one but I enjoyed it.

I watched that this weekend, too. Might have just been that I was tired, but I couldn't get into it. It was a little slow, and I didn't find myself caring about any of the characters. There was some decent eye candy, though.

Saw The Adjustment Bureau yesterday. Good popcorn flick.

This is what everyone I know who saw it thought so who knows.

SOH,

I cant remember if Brent went to Cooper though I think he did. Slap Shot calls me a Cooper Reject (I went to Armstrong) but that is just cause he wishes his team had a real mascot...a Skipper...really? :p

Thought about watching it this weekend...then saw it had a 2:30 running time. Seriously, when will Hollywood learn that FX-driven movies need to be in the 90-105 minute range, and never top two hours. I still think one of the reasons Transformers 2 sucked so hard compared to Transformers 1 was the run time - it was 45 minutes longer, and there was no need for it to be that long.

Watched The Naked Gun on Saturday for the first time in years - still holds up well.
Watched Prince of Persia last night - better than expected. Not noteworthy by any means, but don't think it deserved to get panned as badly as it did. I think some reviewers went in thinking "Crappy video game movie" and panned it as such. Honestly, it had a plot, and some good fight scenes, which made it better than 90% of video game movies and on par with most generic action movies.

So that's why both of them and the third will be, terrible?

Ok, yeah, I know who that is, just couldn't remember how he spelled his name when I posted. Yes I did go to Cooper, no I don't care where some actor went to HS, even if it was my own. :P I did know he was from MN.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

Watched Winter's Bone last night. Excellent. Definitely not a feel good movie, though. Jennifer Lawrence was solid, John Hawkes was amazing as Teardrop.

There's a great after-market opportunity to take those movies and cut every scene involving women, children, and male bonding. That will give you a solid 90 minutes of action and no drivel. Get to the ****ing monkey.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I saw Hall Pass...it was better than expected. Worth five bucks.

Saw the teaser for Hangover II...I think it is going to be good :)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

We Live In Public

Covers about a decade of internet pioneer Josh Harris (yeah, I never heard of him either), and his internet businesses (mostly having to do with the advancing way people use the 'net). Fascinating, until you realize that he was indeed correct on many accounts of how we do, in fact, "live in public." Then it's friggin' scary.

Maybe it's because it's been so gradual, but basically seeing a 90 minute condensation of his experiements, predictions, results etc from the ol' chat-rooms evolution into live streaming really puts it into perspective. And how the guy didn't go clinically insane from one of his "experiments" amazes me.

And here I am, posting about it on the internet. Go figure.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

My purchases from the Blockbuster liquidation sale:

Dark City
The Fountain
Synecdoche, New York
The Prestige
Babel
*sigh* Sex and the City 2

5 out of 6 ain't bad.

Obviously The Prestige is great, but why would you even consider SATC2? Why, Parise why? Your next 100 movie recommendations better be HOF-worthy to even come close to making up for this debacle.

It would have been more accurate to call those "Mrs. EoDS's and my purchases from the Blockbuster liquidation sale"

I won't lie: my wife's tastes have more than their share of glaring mistakes. To her credit, we wound up going with Babel instead of The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus on her insistence. Not that The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus is a bad movie, or even that Babel is necessarily a better film. Just that I'm glad she recommended that film instead of some generic popcorn flick like Eagle Eye or, Lord forbid, Transformers 2.

Oh, and we also go A Prairie Home Companion, which I think was a lot better than most gave it credit for.

Fair enough on the female angle. Then SATC2 is understandable, I suppose. ;)
