Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

The Departed was great until the end. I could have written a better ending. It was one of the single laziest endings I have ever seen in film. Period.

Same problem here with RomComs. Except Fifty First Dates and When Harry Met Sally, which somehow got through my defenses. But the rest... gak.

I can't think of another movie where Ben Stiller is funny. That's why it was such a surprise. It was like seeing Julia Roberts put in a good acting job.

Funny, I also liked 50 First Dates.

Ben Stiller was good in Royal Tennenbaums. Thats about all I can think of off the top of my head. Ok...just looked at his profile on imdb. I do like Mystery Men for some reason. I really cant explain why. It really shouldnt be a good movie.

That movie was terrible. Royal Tennenbaums might be the only movie I've ever turned off and walked away from. Horrible, horrible movie.

Ok, forgot about Tenenbaums. Although he was the 7th best actor in there, at best. I might even put one of the Wilson brothers ahead of him. Yep, I said it.

I was a few days shy of 11 years old when it came out, and I guess that in my youthful stupidity I actually thought it was going to be mostly about the Titanic disaster, so I told my parents I wanted to go see it with them. Oops.

I think that was the first time I ever saw boobs on screen though.

Seeing as you've never seen The Apartment, your list of RomComs that you like should be at 3.

Kate winslet did have some "talent" in that one.

I'll check it out.

I think of RomComs as something specific and in all the cases I can think of, modern (post-1980). For instance, It Happened One Night (one of the GREATEST movies in history, and possibly the greatest comedy ever made) is "romantic" and is a comedy, but it's not a RomCom, IMHO. Same with Arsenic and Old Lace, Philadelphia Story, His Girl Friday, and a dozen other classic movies that were made before studios figured out it was more profitable to treat every audience as comprised of middle schoolers with ADD.

I think an essential aspect of a RomCom is its triteness. Once in a million (or twice) it works, but usually (Pretty Woman, Bridget Jones' Diary, What Women Want, etc.) it's a formulaic opiate for sad, middle-aged haus fraus who want to pretend "it could happen to them." (It can't. They're done.)

In that case The Apartment is not a RomCom as you would define it. Which I do agree with your definition. Just because some is "romantic" and funny does not mean its a RomCom. The Apartment is good though.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

What about Brett.....Fav-er-a? :)

That worked so much better than their attempt to cast Drew Bledsoe as that role (Drew was in some trouble at the time for stage diving and injuring someone at a music club in Boston, I think, and he was advised to turn it down, from what I remember?)
They have had Boston athletes in a few of their movies with Cam Neely and Roger Clemens (off the top of my head) and wanted Bledsoe originally... The Fav-er-a thing worked so well though, I dig that movie

True. Having Farve probably helps Something About Mary have a little more staying power. Hell, who now could really pick Bledsoe out of a lineup?
