http://www.avclub.com/articles/yes-cate-blanchett-will-be-back-for-the-hobbit,48731/

Really, the interesting part of the article is this:

There’s still no official confirmation of a return from Ian McKellen, who hinted earlier this month that he might be pushing to renegotiate for a bigger payday. Considering the last time someone tried to play hardball with Jackson, he ended up getting an entire country to rewrite its labor laws, McKellen might want to just go ahead and say yes.

I hadn't thought about it that way, but it's true. Peter Jackson got an entire country to rewrite its labor laws for him. Say what you will about how indulgent and heavy handed King Kong and The Lovely Bones were, but that's pretty ****ing impressive.

Okay, and I'm secretly excited about The Hobbit.

Ok, I saw a commercial for this tron movie you guys have been talking about. It looks terrible. I didn't have any clue what the hell it was about after watching the trailer, except that there was no way I was going to waste time on it. My sister then explained what the plot of the movie supposedly is, and I realized that the movie is actually worse than I had first imagined.

I am going to see this next Thursday. :o I was offered two free tickets to an advance screening and I'm sure my kid will like it so I signed up.

Yeah, I've been thinking about doing that myself. I almost wish one of the local theatures around here would dig up a copy of the orginal "Tron" out so that they can play it at like 11 pm, and then let us watch "Tron: Legacy" at midnight. One would have to think if they're going to have a big midnight opening, that would do well, along with helping to keep some of the crowd under controll as well.

Rumor is Disney's pulled all available copies of the original Tron off shelves - it's also no longer available on netflix at all (it was at one point, because it's on my rental history). Not sure why, but good luck finding it for sale anywhere, let alone available to theaters unless they have an old print in storage.

The bigger question I have is when is "The King's Speech" going into wide release? imdb listed today as its release date, but still looks like it's limited to 2 dozen theaters at most in NY and California.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

That is a rather idiotic move by Disney...do they think it will create more demand or something? There is a better chance people will go see the second Tron if they have a shot to see the first...it isnt like it will interfere with the guaranteed boxset that will come out next summer when Tron 2 Electric Bugaloo comes out on DVD.

I found this for $6 on a trip through Best Buy. It's probably the greatest quality per dollar deal I've ever seen:

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

People do realize that Tron is a really, really, really bad movie, right? I love it, but it's not good. It was a movie showing off visuals that are now 30 years dated, and the new one, by all accounts, is just another visual fest with terrible, terrible plot. But I will be there.

There's nothing about the original that would make people want to see the new one, so why bother having a terrible product out there that may keep people away?

I am a romantic who wants to believe that 99% of the Tron audience will be there for ironic, self-reflective reasons.

But I want to believe that about the GOP, too.

I will never watch Tron, it looks stupid. But if people will pay 10 bucks to watch an outdated sequel to it they will pay 12 (or less, my guess is it was a bargain price unless they rereleased it with 4 minutes of EXTRA FOOTAGE!!111111!!!!) to watch the original as well.

Right, and if they do a teaser showing of the original Tron, that would likely to help permote the new Tron as well. As a Sci-Fi Nerd, that movie is right up there with what helped to inspire other stuff that came after it, like Star Wars and a few others. Hell, to today's kids, Super Mario Brothers is a lousy game with poor graffics, a lousy controller, and it doesn't have any save points in it at all. But to all of us who had to blow on the cartrage to get the game to work in the NES, it is a timeless classic, a stroll down memory lane.

Well said.

ALthough, I haven't seen either tron.

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I have a copy of Tron on DVD. Maybe I can sell it for big $$$$ now that they are hard to find! :D

Yes, Tron was so ahead of its time that it inspired movies that came out before them.

I was comparing Tron to how it inspired other stuff in Sci-Fi after it was released. Hell, do you think we get the totally awesome liquid T-1000 CGI without being shown that it could be done with a computer without a few other films that showed that CGI could be done??

Yes but the way you worded it it sounded like you were saying that it inspired Star Wars which it obviously didn't. :)

Re: New/Rented Movies: Bring Back Laserdiscs!

I know this is a manly man's site and everything.....but

If you enjoy Cher and/or Christina Agulara.....or just want to watch scantily clad women shake their goodies for 2 hours....I would highly recommend Burlesque. Music was amazing and was very visually appealing....in the sexual manner and non :)
