New Poll Predictions for 12/14

Re: New Poll Predictions for 12/14

ECAC NE (Curry, Wentworth) is a historically weak league, and never got an NCAA bid until they got their autobid. (Think of a 20+ year long reputation like the MCHA has had.) With a couple of exceptions, their teams have never gotten a lot of national respect. The NESCAC has a strong reputation, but historically Williams hasn't been a factor very often, and Colby was buried by the pollsters as being a bad team at the start of the season. The thoughts on those two probably run in the direction of "early season flukes"

Curry got an At-Large in 2003-04 season, after lsoing in their conference finals. They ended up losing to Plattsburgh 5-4 in OT. Curry and WIT are very good teams this year and deserving of their rankings!! Time will tell how good they really are as their OOC games will get difficult 2nd semester, especially for CURRY!!

Re: New Poll Predictions for 12/14

All along I've said it was hard to see where teams should fit between NU and PSU given that the head to head matchup was so even. Yes Platty won the second half of that game, but NU won the first half and the final result was a tie (decided by the closest shootout I've seen). A case could be made for either team, but fitting somebody between them makes no sense.

I'll ask Prez for the Powerball and then I'll have you look over his picks.

Thank you for noticing he just picked up off my coat tails:cool:

Except for putting Manhattanville in the poll instead of Superior and switching Plattsburgh/Norwich I was dead on.

And Norwich ALMOST got them.

I wasn't saying the NE isn't legit. Just that until they got the autobid, the conference was totally ignored, and that among the voters in the poll the conference may not be considered up to the same level as other conferences. The split off of the MASCAC also muddies the waters in regard to what the NE is/isn't. We're going to see how Curry stacks up on New Year's night for sure. I really respect the fact that Curry always seems to go out and play as good OOC schedule as they can get. That's the way to upgrade a program to a higher level and make it possible to get Pool C bids when you don't win the autobid.

Re: New Poll Predictions for 12/14

Somebody please explain Middlebury...Williams with a better record ranked lower and a similar overall record to Bowdoin, Amherst, Colby and Tufts. Nowhere near the top of the NESCAC in any statistical category....who is voting for this team??

Code:
2009-10 Men's Ice Hockey
  	         Conf. Overall
Williams 4-0-0 6-0-1
Bowdoin 4-1-0 5-2-0
Middlebury 2-0-2 3-1-2
Tufts 3-1-1 5-2-1
Trinity 2-1-1 4-2-1
Colby 3-2-0 6-2-0
Amherst 2-2-0 5-2-0

Expectation, habit, laziness. Teams (including Midd) among the perennial powers get votes because some voters figure they must be good even if their record doesn't show it. We joke that RIT could get votes in the DIII for the same reason. Some of the voters (especially the coaches) don't take their votes seriously.

Legacy points - aka "Top of Mind Awareness" - aka "The first name that comes to mind" - certainly NOT the usual "What have you done for me lately, mentality". It appears obvious, paraphrasing NUPROF, 'Someone(s) doesn't take their votes seriously."

It also possible, that some of the voters, likely coaches, consider the quality of the coaching staff as a "significant" measurement of the teams potential, that being the case, teams like Middlebury (Bill Beaney, a .761 win record at Middlebury) will get votes.

I have messed around a few times trying to see how my rankings would differ, and I found it often took twice as long to rank the last five as it did the first ten. The rationale or arguments for choices that vary with mine, and with others, usually surface, and are usually convincing.
The weekly "New Poll" thread is probably the one that I enjoy more than any other during the year because it's one of the few that attracts interest and good discussion from all points on the DIII map.
While I'm sure indifference or laziness may taint some of the voters submissions, some of the time, I find this Poll to be credible most of the time, especially ranking 1-10.

Agreed...I just did my mid-season poster's poll, and the last 5 teams were incredibly hard to decide on. Either a team hasn't beaten/played anyone, or they have good wins and terrible losses on their resumes.

Ditto. That took forever to figure out.

I had an easy time with the first seven and then it was very hard.

The last three especially.

I might be the only person that ranks the team i put at #15. I'm excited to see if there is more than one point next to their name when Wormser releases the results:cool:
