New D1 Programs?

Re: New D1 Programs?

When schools such as UofM and MSu are UNWILLING to put up a women's team I don't see how others will. Those two schools should be shamed into it, truly a different way of thinking, especially both claiming such a hockey heritage. Hockeytown etc etc, the truth is hockey is not as strong in that area as they would like you to think.
I'd almost bet that other institutions, their Presidents and AD's are more open to the idea than Michigan or Michigan State. Penn St. and Lindenwood a couple recent examples. No idea about the schools mentioned in the article but the financial / economic angle and feasibility surely varies for different schools as well.

Re: New D1 Programs?

I'm assuming women's hockey would have to go with a new men's program especially at Iowa State. Not sure if ISU would even have any other women's sports left to add. Six hours or less on a bus gets you to most WCHA locations. Same thing with WIGB.

I can't think of a men's program has started/elevated without women in past ten years due to Title 9. There have been two women only starts.

Re: New D1 Programs?

Once the Big Ten women's championship is awarded it won't be long before those two dinosaurs jump on the bandwagon.

I have a feeling that Michigan and Michigan State will jump to NCAA for women's ice hockey. (Michigan State in particular has a strong women's club team that was a big rival with Lindenwood in the ACHA before LU moved to the NCAA. Penn State adding men's and women's hockey and the addition of men's hockey as a Big Ten sport makes NCAA women's hockey and Big Ten women's hockey much more of a reality.

What really interesting is that Michigan has a women's water polo team. It's a fun sport but there's few teams in the Midwest with most being in California and New England. Swapping water polo for ice hockey saves any Title IX issues right there.

Why would they? umoo has blatantly bypassed it every chance they have had. Think about it water polo and now adding lacrosse

Re: New D1 Programs?

Even with the addition of men's hockey woamen's sports still outnumber men's sports 12-11. That would be the reason for that.

Which is fine since their enrollment is what, about 55-45? I was just offering an example of a school that added a men's program without adding a women's sport at the same time.

Re: New D1 Programs?

Minnesota's Lucia Calls Husker Hockey a "Natural""One problem with adding a men's sport is needing to add women's sports to ensure compliance with Title IX. Women's hockey could be the answer here, though it would be dependent on men's hockey generating enough revenue to keep both programs out of the red."http://www.cornnation.com/2012/2/21/2814494/minnesotas-lucia-calls-husker-hockey-a-natural

I find it unfortunate that Lucia calls it a "problem".

Re: New D1 Programs?

Obviously, this guy doesn't follow hockey if he doesn't realize that teams like Denver, CC, UND, and UMD are national powers in the Gophers' current conference:
Or is all this talk simply Don Lucia looking for a patsy to pad his schedule out, now that the Gophers will have to play four other national powers four times each every season?

I believe he was referring to the new Big Ten conference, when his team will be playing Michigan, Michigan State, Ohio State and Wisconsin four times each year. Having Nebraska (along with Penn State) would help improve his record, at least initially, but I don't believe that would be Lucia's motivation for wanting to add another Big Ten team. And either way it's still a dumb comment by the writer in my opinion.

In any case it would be good to see either Nebraska school (Lincoln or Nebraska-Omaha) add womens D1 hockey, as it would help expand the sport geographically. And both schools already have nice facilities.

It seems pretty clear from talking to sources both within women's hockey and at the University of Michigan that there is one major roadblock to starting a women's team there. When that roadblock finally retires, I would expect it to get a fresh look. I would also guess that if either Michigan or Michigan State add women's hockey, the other will as well.

Unfortunately, I think the culture against such an occurrence is too firmly engrained.

I'm not sure what culture and what occurrence you're referring to. If it's that the culture is too ingrained against allowing women's hockey, I think you are oversimplifying. Right now, I agree that it is the case. However, whenever Red Berenson retires, that position loses by far its most influential advocate. I don't think we know where things will fall after that. What we do know is that AD David Brandon wants to add more sports and that Michigan is one of the few athletic departments in the country that can afford to actually do so.

Is it a guarantee that they add women's hockey? No. Not even close. However, it's way too early to be convinced the other way, too.

Re: New D1 Programs?

With the men's Big10 set to begin operations next year I suspect that business imperatives (aka the possibility of providing additional programming to the hugely financially successful Big 10 Network and thereby making large piles of money) will lead in a very short time to consideration of women's hockey by Michigan, Michigan State and Nebraska.
