My reading comp is just fine...you call the team 'dirty' and 'reverting to form' taking penalties, but now you want to twist it, when I point out the actual facts about the game and the type of penalties that were actually called....whatever.
Also, you seem a bit ignorant on many things, but most importantly the size of a school's endowment and the roll that the endowment plays [at the end of the day, it means Everything] at each school...in particular when it comes to facilities....Please take a moment to do some basic research before you spout off about the rink...If you don't like it, or feel too embarrassed to step foot in the place, do us all a favor and go away. The fact that Conn can compete in the nescac is no small miracle given the disparity in their endowment with the likes of Amherst, Williams, Bowdoin, etc. As for admissions helping the coaches...suffice it to say it goes on everywhere to one degree or another, but if you don't think that some nescac schools place an out-of proportion emphasis on sports and winning [Williams, Amherst, Bowdoin, Middlebury come to mind] then you are delusional.
Hard to believe the Bantams choked??? Congrats to Elmira on advancing
So for the second season in a row there will be no NESCAC representative in the Women's DIII finals. Robert was outstanding in goal and Champagne scored twice in the 2nd (including a nifty shortie) as they led Norwich to a come from behind 3-2 win before an enthusiastic crowd at Kenyon this evening. The 1st period featured end to end, old fashioned "fire wagon" hockey with a stretch of possibly 8 minutes without a whistle. Middlebury opened the scoring when Martin and VanKula were grinding behind the Norwich net and in the right wing corner before getting the puck to Sullivan coming across the crease from Cadet goalie Robert's gloveside, fighting thru the D and putting her own rebound home with a backhand from a low, sharp angle, stickside. Norwich evened the game on a long wrist shot by Gemmiti from left point. Murphy had the puck on the left half boards, faked a shot and got tangled up with a Midd forward diving for a block; Murphy got the puck back to Gemmiti and her shot made it through traffic and beat Panther goalie Marsh high stickside. Middlebury regained the lead on a power play goal late in the period. Fluke fed off the left half boards for Watson on left point; she walked right before sliding a pass to Bielawski moving to the top of the right circle and blasting a one timer home. The momentum of the whole game turned on a Middlebury power play in the 2nd. Robert made a huge series of stops on first Sherman and then Sullivan, point blank on the door step at 7:50. Less than a minute later a Panther D was making a play to keep the puck in zone on right point in front of the Midd bench when Champange got a stick on the pass toward the left point, tipped the puck high and then grabbed it in the neutral zone and was off to the races on a clean break away. Champagne was in alone, came in from left to right, faked Marsh to the goalie's stickside, Marsh held her ground and appeared to stuff the play only to have Champagne beat her 5 hole for the score. Four minutes later it was Champagne with the game winner. DeCock made a play on the left half boards, passed to Murphy for a shot from the left circle that Marsh saved; Champagne found the rebound in traffic and buried the puck beating Marsh up gloveside from the slot. Middlebury saw a great chance fly away, literally, at 10:30 when a Watson drive from the blue line rang off the crossbar.on a power play. At 13:16 Robert made another key stop robbing Bielawski when she snuck into the slot for a feed from behind the net. Coach Mandigo went for the extra attacker following a time out with 1:59 to play and the Panthers appeared to tie the score with :30 to go after a furious battle at the top of the crease, only to have the ref, cage side on the goal line, wave the goal off. Consultation ensued and after speaking with the goal judge the no goal call stood. Norwich had taken a checking penalty in the right wing corner as the chaos at the crease was unfolding, but Middlebury, skating 6x4, never got the puck back to the net and the Cadets held on for the 3-2 victory and their ticket to play Plattsburgh next Friday.
best conference....
I should probably reply with something snarky like maybe River Falls will win a game in 2015...in November, but I will be in Plattsburgh routing for the Falcons, as everyone loves an underdog, and it would be great for DIII women's hockey if the west actually wins one of these years!
The NESCAC is the best conference, just not winning it all this season..."tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther... And one fine morning-"
GO U FALCONS!!!
I have a very deep knowledge of the value of the endowment in college athletics and also in how many schools use it as an excuse for poor facilities and performance (not suggesting that Conn is, but you are on its behalf). I'm sorry you have such a negative, martyr-ish opinion of your daughter's chosen school - apparently a poor sister school that only can dream about competing with the rich folks. What a load of c**p - give it a break - Conn is 53 out of 450 D3 schools (top 15%) in athletic spending and in the top 25% of all college endowments (including the D1 schools) and absolutely could have a better rink if they made it a priority - many lower endowment D3 schools have better facilities. St. A's for example has less than half of the endowment that Conn has and look at its rink - they simply made it a priority to find a lead donor. Conn doesn't have to apologize for deciding to place their capital campaign emphasis elsewhere, but it can't use that as an excuse for having a bad rink facility. They are a poor athletic sister to the other NESCACs because they choose to be (and out-of-proportion is subjective and meaningless - out of proportion to you I guess - but apparently not to the other schools). And I didn't go to a NESCAC school, so I'm not an Old NESCAC Boy and can't cure your feelings of inferiority on behalf of Conn.
And by the way, as Whistleboy says, winning is fun - and who doesn't want to have fun in sports (that one is for UCONN Fan)?

I have been quietly reading this forum for the past eight years and am always so impressed with the detailed and very fair analysis that Obserbear posts regarding the NESCAC games. I am from the Midwest and was actually embarrassed by GoJackets comments. The NESCAC has always been a very deep conference, unlike the west conferences, but hopefully this will change in the future. Thanks Bear for you classy response regarding River Falls - Gojackets should take a page out of your book - just saying . . .

So, I didn't say that this year's team was dirty, I was referring to prior years. If you read and absorbed what I wrote, then you would know that what I wrote was that now that they had talent that they had stopped playing dirty and taking penalties at previous rates and that they had their best season ever as a result. And that in the last 10 minutes of the Bowdoin game they returned to previous form by taking penalties that cost them the game (didn't say those penalties were dirty). You just read what you want to create an argument rather than what is written.
Talk about an inferiority complex/paranoia..... just wow! Conn is and has generally always been a good school, whether they are athletically competitive or not, and anyone who goes there (or their parents) should be proud of that. This year they were very competitive in women's hockey (I still expected them to finish higher though with their talent level).
With respect to recruiting, the reality is that their admissions standards are generally lower (but not hugely) than most other NESCAC schools across the student body - look it up on any assessment - so they have more reach without having to lower their standards. So it doesn't surprise me at all that they can get good players that might not be able to get in to some of the other NESCACs - I'm more surprised they haven't done better recruiting in the past. Regardless, if you think that they don't "bend the rules" (to use your jargon) to get in athletes who wouldn't normally get in on their own, then you are either ignorant or stupid. I am aware of the academic info on several of the players on this year's team (and a couple of future recruiting candidates) and I can tell you with certainty they would not have gotten into Conn without special consideration. It would be true that Coach Steele has a limited number of players with which to use that influence (and that your daughter may not have been one of them by Coach Steele's choice based on her ability to get in on her own or her hockey ability), but all of the NESCAC coaches have limited influence also.
And the rink - it's bad and frankly kind of embarrassing to a school of the means and stature of Conn. The fact that Steele can recruit in spite of it is a positive commentary on her (and the academic reputation of the school).
