NESCAC season 2014-2015

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Wild 2nd 3-1 PB end of 2. Bell on a nice break away then Bell on pp. Toupal on pp for Amherst. PB played pretty even. Made most of chances

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Bowdoin took the ice at Orr this afternoon in control of their own destination (if not destiny) and skated away with a 3-2 over Amherst, thereby earning a trip to New London to face Conn College in the NESCAC quarter-final Saturday. The Lord Jeffs came out flying in the 1st and repeatedly tested Polar Bear goalie Crofton. Despite being outshot 15-6 for the period the Polar Bears cashed in an opportunity late in the frame. MacNeil worked the puck off the left half boards to Rathke at the point; Rathke moved right to mid blue line and stepped around the puck getting on her forehand, but did not get a lot on her drive, however Amherst goalie Evans moved and Bell tipped the shot from the slot in over Evans for the 1-0 lead end of the 1st. Bowdoin came out with renewed vigor in the 2nd and was applying a lot of pressure, getting pucks to the net only to be thwarted by Evans. The second Polar Bear goal came off an outstanding read by Baird from deep in the Bowdoin D zone. She spotted Bell off the bench in center ice and made a perfect indirect pass off the boards in front of the scorers, catching Bell in stride and springing her past the lone Amherst D back; Bell was in clean, dangled on her forehand, Evans bit and Bell drew the puck back and slid it home on her backhand to Evans stickside. Bowdoin then took a series of penalties and was shorthanded nearly 6 consecutive minutes. Amherst finally cashed in with Salmon dishing the puck to Smith at left point; her drive was true, but Crofton made the pad save only to have Toupal ram the puck home from the door step beating Crofton gloveside. 3 minutes later Bowdoin extended the lead with a powerplay of their own. Finnerty fed Bell in the left corner; Bell then made a great pass to MacNeil parked on the back door for a one timer in under Evans gloveside. The 3rd saw outstanding end to end action without stop for something like 6 minutes at one point. Amherst drew within a goal when Molina made a play pinching off a clearing attempt, holding the blue line on the boards and advanced the puck down the right half boards to Salmon; Salmon looped of the boards into a seam and fed Harris for a forehand from the top of the crease beating Crofton. The Lord Jeffs took a time out with 2 minutes to play and were able to pull Evans for the extra attacker, but were unable to get the equalizer and things ended with the 3-2 final. Amherst may have suffered an even bigger loss in the waning seconds when Ryan went hard into the boards in the right corner of the Amherst D zone, stayed down and was helped off ice with an ankle/leg injury. Congratulations to Amherst senior forward Salmon! Her 2 assists today allow her to reach the 100 point mark in her 102nd game as a Lord Jeff! Pretty rare in the NESCAC to be a point a game player.
So the regular season ends and we have the NESCAC first round matchups: Hamilton@Middlebury, Colby@Amherst, Williams@Trinity and Bowdoin@Conn College.

Hey Bear - Thanks for the great coverage again this year. You always seem to be right on the money with the details, and you favor no one (even though we know you bleed black and white). It is always fair, balanced, positive and upbeat. I love following the NESCAC, as they talent is so strong, that any one team can beat the other on any given weekend. Yes there are stronger teams than others, but rarely are there blowouts in any of these games. I look forward to the games this weekend. Bear, I assume you will be taking in the Bowdoin - Conn College. If so, look forward to that or any other report.

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

NESCAC quarter-finals today!

Hamilton at Middlebury-played 2 close games in Middlebury a month ago, but I think the Panthers have too much for the Continentals; lots of emotional stuff here though: potentially Coach Mandigo's 500th career victory; Coach McNamara played in 100 of those Panther wins (played in all 116 games in 4 years on teams going 100-13-3, winning 3 NCAA titles)

Colby at Amherst-the Lord Jeffs won both close regular season games with Colby at Alfond by 2-1 and 3-1; the Mules are not a comeback team, going 0-8 in NESCAC play when trailing after 2, but are 6-4 in 1 goal games; Lord Jeffs out shot Colby about 2-1 in their 2 meetings; in their 1st game there were NO penalties called; Colby upset Amherst last year, I would not bet on it twice in a row

Williams at Trinity-split 2 regular season games at Lansing-Chapman; Cleroux pitched a shutout in the Eph win; Williams was 3-6 on the road in NESCAC play and 0-6 trialing after 2; Williams out scored opponents in the 1st and faded in the 3rd; Trinity is 8-1 leading after 2, but 4-6-1 when opponents scored first; bottom line appears to be Williams needs to come out strong and play with the lead or it is turn out the lights; Ephs are 1-5 in February NESCAC play; Trinity went 4-1-1 in February; Williams in an upset (gut feeling here, don't bet the ranch)

Bowdoin at Connecticut College-split 2 games at Watson in early January; shots over the 2 games were 53-52 and scores were 2-1 and 3-1; Polar Bears are 1-6-1 behind end of 2 and 4-0-1 ahead end of 2, so maybe we can leave Dayton early, eh? Camels are 1-5-1 behind after 2; CC is 3-7 when opponents score first and 4-0-2 scoring first; CC penalty kill is outstanding (although they have had less practice than in seasons past, holding a 61-55 lead in penalties called in NESCAC); really another toss up, so I have to go...Polar Bears (Black and White dreams) advancing

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Williams-Trinity was a well-played game by both teams. Williams outplayed Trinity for the majority of the game but couldn't find the back of the net. Game decided at the end of the first (last 10 seconds) by an attempted pass from along the goal line that took an odd bounce and found the goal. Possibly the best game of 2015 by the Williams team. Think Trinity will need to play better than this game to advance next weekend.

Kinda strange not a single Trinity player made the list... Lucy Robinson, second to Fluke in total points and a senior?

Re: NESCAC season 2014-2015

Maybe their coach decided not to nominate them or missed the deadline to nominate players? Because Lucy has solid numbers for this year, and her career.

A valid question, but having watched Trinity a couple of times this year and conceding they are a good team, I would say that no one in particular stuck out on the team. Also, the fact that they took by far the most penalties in the NESCAC and that an abnormally high % of them were of the roughing, checking, elbowing, cross-checking, etc. variety, including a couple of game misconducts, they probably did not endear themselves to the other coaches. If they missed the nomination deadline, then Potter or her assistants were just not interested or focused (which is consistent with what I've heard despite their success this season - maybe she was busy filling out her UMD application :)).

Actually, there were 3 penalties against NESCAC teams this season that were not 2 minute minors: 5 for boarding by Amherst vs. Williams, 5 for roughing by Trinity at Williams, and 5 for butt ending, plus 10 DQ by Williams @ Conn College.

So no game misconducts against Trinity.

A tip of the cap to Coach Steele for changing her team's style of play in the right direction. I used to think they were the chippiest/dirtiest team in the league, with multiple 10 minute penalties in recent seasons. Of their 200 penalty minutes this year, only 122 in conference play (3rd behind Trinity's 161 and Midd's 130). May be at least part of why she's COTY.

Best of luck to all the teams still standing.
