Nescac 2013-14

Re: Nescac 2013-14

Before the days of video coverage of virtually every NESCAC game and an up to speed NESCAC scoreboard page, the score updates posted on this board by those folks at the games or with a radio feed were very helpful. I'd say that their usefulness has diminished to the point where it is now just noise. The NESCAC scoreboard page keeps things quite up to date and final scores are available within minutes of the ends of the games. While I appreciate the efforts of those who like to add a post every time a NESCAC goal is scored, this is easily acquired information for those who want or need it. Probably should have posted this over on the weekly scores thread but since I'm NESCAC-centric and don't really care what happens in the rest of the D3 men's hockey world, it ended up here.

Same info is available for all games at "the other" site complete with links to Radio and Video streams, too. People still like to banter about games here. On Sunday I had nothing better to do, so I posted the scores. If it offends you ...

When I'm looking for scores of games in progress (1) go to the other place (2) fan forum for comments as to what is happening (3) would never think of a league site like NESCAC site

BOWDOIN 3 - COLBY 1

I watched the game on the very good broadcast from Waterville.

Bowdoin seems to have returned to a more traditional alignment (three forwards and two defensemen) after using a 2-2-1 system last weekend. The Polar Bears were outplayed by the White Mules for most of the second and third periods.

The Polar Bears continue to disappoint. It's beyond me why this team, with so much speed and skill, known for a creative offense and physicality, has resorted to mainly peripheral play. Go to the slot, young men!

Several mistakes on defense by the Polar Bears resulted in scoring chances for the White Mules. Colby's goal was scored after Bowdoin's Gabe Renaud (generally a pretty reliable defenseman and last season's best Bowdoin freshman) tried to check a Colby attacker with the stick instead of using his body. In all fairness, however, in the third period Bowdoin's defenders were pretty good about clearing the puck away after Fenkell had made the initial save.

Bowdoin had a fast start but began to fade in the second period. Harry Matheson's timely goal late in the third period and Max Fenkell's terrific performance in the net (what else is new?) saved the evening for the Polar Bears.

Colby played with a lot of intensity and had numerous opportunities to tie the game before Matheson's goal. The White Mules are very well coached by Blaise McDonald. They're young and inexperienced but watch out for them in a year or two.

Congratulations to Bowdoin coach Terry Meagher on his 499th win.

I'm driving to Brunswick tomorrow for the rematch, still hoping to see a Bowdoin team worthy of my three hours behind the wheel and the tolls in the New Hampshire and Maine turnpikes! :-)

COLBY 4 - BOWDOIN 2

Well deserved win by Colby over Bowdoin in Brunswick.

I've watched Bowdoin's four games this season -- three on the webcast and one live -- and in every case the Polar Bears have been outplayed and outhustled. They didn't deserve to win last night (though they managed to win) and they didn't deserve to win tonight (and lost).

Bowdoin seems to be a team without direction, a team without identity. They've been terrible defensively and their offense has been mediocre. Over a span of a week they went from playing a 2-2-1 system to playing a more traditional 2-1-2 system, and in both cases they disappointed. Why even try the 2-2-1 when you don't have players like Jon Landry, Mike Westerman, Kyle Shearer-Hardy or Tim McGarry to make it work? Crazy!!!! And it's beyond me why Bowdoin insisted on trying to stickhandle around a trapping team like Colby. Dump the puck, muck it out in the corners, and try to create the right triangle to take a good shot on net.

Colby played the perfect game to beat the impatient and overconfident Polar Bears. They trapped, they hustled, they hit, they disrupted Bowdoin's passes, and took advantage of Bowdoin's many mistakes. Sam Parker had an excellent game in goal, and forward captain Nick Lanza was outstanding. Lanza received the Peter Schue Award as the MVP of the game.

Once again the senior class disappointed. Defenseman co-captain Jay Livermore made several crucial mistakes and forwards Colin Downey, Ollie Koo, Harry Matheson and Kyle Lockwood were ineffective. There doesn't seem to be on-the-ice leadership coming from the Bowdoin seniors. There's no question that the Polar Bears miss the class of 2013, one of the most successful in Bowdoin's history, with their two NESCAC titles and three NCAA tournament appearances in four years -- certainly up there with the great classes of 1971, 1977 and 1989.

Re: Nescac 2013-14

Pretty exciting day in the smart conference. Middlebury is taken to OT by the Camels and that's a moral victory if nothing else. But good teams (the Panthers) do find a way to win even if they are not firing on all cylinders. Hamilton gets 8-goals against a defensively porous Cardinal team. The Continentals have struggled on offense for a while now and to get 8 in one fell swoop is an early Xmas present. So either Wesleyan mailed it tonight, or their defense and or goaltending is a serious question mark. Routine win for the Ephs and they get the automatic win vs. Tufts. An improved Colby team takes out Bowdoin on the road and there is a definite unease amongst Polar Bear nation. Amherst gets past Trinity in what seemed like a strange game with the home team eccentric announcer displaying more than his typical amount of shrieking enthusiasm. The belaboring of the amount of face-off ejections got tired quickly. Hamilton is not getting 8 goals against Trinity tomorrow and Amherst just might be 4-0 come the afternoon.

Re: Nescac 2013-14

After a couple of seasons without Tortorella, it's great to see Colby coming back with a competitive team. Parker is solid in goal, and a large freshman class has contributed three goals already. Zeek, Lanza and some other Juniors and Seniors are showing the benefits of their experience. I'm hoping MacDonald will stay around and continue to build this team. Unfortunately, I had to miss both Bowdoin-Colby webcasts due to other commitments. It really broke my heart. So thanks @Euler for these two insightful write-ups.

A couple of comments. First, regarding Middlebury, they were terrible with the lead all weekend. They allowed Tufts to come back from a three goal deficit to within a goal and they squandered a two goal lead against Conn College surrendering the equalizer with under a minute to go. Something needs to change there. Is it goaltending or discipline with the puck when playing with the lead? They sat back on Saturday with the two goal lead and had to kill off a penalty in OT before Charles found the back of the net on the PP. If it weren't for that, it would have been a very bad tie. In fact, it was a bad win if such a thing exists. That sort of play won't hold up in the Primelink!

Regarding the Colby Bowdoin game in Brunswick. I have to applaud the NSN coverage of the game. Play by play and color were excellent and the video quality complete with almost immediate replays was superb. A great game with a somewhat surprising result. Colby played great and to the Polar Bears credit, they never quit. Why would they!

Boy, I know another team that can't put on the killer as well!

Re: Nescac 2013-14

The box score from the Tufts-Manhattanville game shows Tufts with ZERO shots on net and Manhattanville with 64. Must be a mistake. Anybody know?

Re. BOWDOIN

It's nice to see that Bowdoin senior Colin Downey appears to have regained his scoring touch. Downey has been one of my favorite Bowdoin players since his freshman year, but he seemed to be in a funk for most of Bowdoin's first four games. This young man has terrific skills and excellent hockey sense. His perfect pass to Matt Rubinoff for Bowdoin's third goal was a thing of beauty.
