Nescac 2011-2012

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

So Wesleyan beats Hamilton 4-0 to jump into 8th place and earn what maybe their first appearance in the NESCAC playoffs and nobody has anything to say about it???????

I guess that I should give it a thumbs up because I currently have a rooting interest in the Wesleyan women's team.

Hats off to the Wesleyan Goalie, she played an incredible game, she gave the team the inspiration they needed and kept the puck out of the net.

I could give you something about bus legs etc, but simply put the Hamilton girls had 3 very high intensity games where they played some of the best hockey this season but could not put it together this weekend in CT. They were able to get the win on Friday, but it was not a pretty win.

Wesleyan put together some fast breaks, got the bounces on Saturday but the refs were all over them giving them 7 penalties. Despite this the goalie was outstanding turning back 37 shots, especially in the 3rd period where Hamilton put on a ton of pressure but could not get one by her.

This is the NESCAC and on any day any team can win, if you forget that you will get reminded sooner or later.

I guess that I should give it a thumbs up because I currently have a rooting interest in the Wesleyan women's team.

Very happy to see the Wes team's hard work and gritty play be rewarded with a win. They've been in many games this year that could have gone either way, but went the other.

Agree that Saturday's game was a result of a high energy by the team as a whole, and an outstanding performance by the Wes goalie.

Worth noting: between Friday and Saturday's games, Ham 0-13 on the PP (including a 5 minute major Fri night), Wes 1/5, and Wes' EN goal on Saturday was SH 4 on 6 with the goalie pulled.

With Colby coming into town this weekend, it's too early to talk about who's going to the dance. But I do believe that Wes was in the tournament the first couple of years of the league.

Go Cards!

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

But I do believe that Wes was in the tournament the first couple of years of the league.

Apologies to the Cardinals! They did participate in the NESCAC playoffs, suffering quarter-final defeats in '01-'02 (7-1 loss @ Williams), '02-'03 (3-0 loss @ Williams) and '03-'04 (8-0 loss @ Williams).
One thing I have never understood about the women's hockey program at Wesleyan is if you look at the history on the walls of Kenyon Arena they played Middlebury in the AWCHA or ECAC tournaments back in the '90s, so how did their team take such a negative turn after '03-'04? It is not like they had no tradition of success in the sport.

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

Hard to say....but Wes isn't exactly a sports powerhouse, now are they? Last I checked, [with rare exception] they seem to be at or near the bottom in most every NESCAC sport...hockey is no exception to that rule.

There are 2 weeks to go in the regular season and the only sure thing in predicting the NESCAC playoff picture is Amherst and Middlebury will host quarter-final action on 2/25. Bowdoin took huge strides toward securing a home quarter-final with their sweep of Trinity last weekend, but still needs to take care of business and earn that 9th win.

Bowdoin sweeps Hamilton-I know, I know, the Black and White colored glasses, and looking at the stats these teams are pretty even in everything (slight edge to the PB in net) and they have to play in the small ice confines of Russell Sage, but the Polar Bears have been hot, so PB sweep

Middlebury sweeps Williams-another of these NESCAC blood feud rivalries; the Ephs played Amherst tough last week and this is a home and home series, but this is the end of NESCAC play for the Panthers and I just do not see them faltering

Amherst sweeps Trinity-the Lord Jeffs have to keep winning to control their own destiny in locking up hosting rights for the NESCAC finals; Amherst leads the NESCAC in saves % at .943, margin of victory at +2.67, allows 1 goal/game and kills penalties at .914; Trinity goes as far as their goal play allows

Colby and Wesleyan split-a sweep by either team would be a big step toward the 8th playoff spot; stats are pretty even

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

Hamilton - Bowdoin == Split. Hamilton's been less effective since its surprise of Midd, and just tied Utica, which was only able to squeak by Chatham 1-0 on a PPG (check out the box for that game, looks like the refs wore out a few whistles!), but I think they'll respond at home.

Midd - Williams == Midd sweep. Don't think they'll be surprised as they were vs. Ham. Blood sport, like Amh/Wms, so expect close games, high energy.

Amherst - Trinity == Amh sweep. Would have called this a potential for an upset and split, but for Trinity's rough weekend in Maine. Amherst should hold its own on home ice.

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

You have to love the NESCAC this time of year. Just when you think you have it all figured out you are forced to understand that is not true. I remember someone saying "smart girls can't play hockey" (and strangely she was a smart girl who did play hockey) and not withstanding the NESCAC success accumulating DIII hockey championships, what I think she meant was smart girls play inscrutable, unpredictable hockey. Looking at the stats and trends going into last evening's matchup at Orr I was naively dismissing Trinity's chances. I was up at Watson and witnessed their lost weekend against the Polar Bears; Amherst was sitting atop the NESCAC, leading in a number of statistical categories (including penalty kill%); it is Senior Weekend for Amherst, former players and parents all over the place, however I guess nobody told the Bantams. Trinity beat Amherst and it was not one of those flukey, get outshot and your goalie stands on her head kind of upsets: they played the USCHO poll's #3 team and won, period. The Lord Jeffs had their chances, but went 0-4 on the powerplay in the 1st and trailed 2-0 at the end of the period. Trinity scored just as they had killed a penalty. Colman-McGaw grabbed a puck, and rather than dump it and get off ice, she lugged it through center and broke in something like 1x4, down the left wing, kept her edge in muscling around a D and got off a backhand from the low edge of the left circle beating Russell 5 hole. The Bantams then cashed in their lone powerplay chance of the 1st a moment later. Glynn fed the puck to Sword on the right point just inside the blueline and her drive was deftly deflected into the upper corner of the net by Bauer who was parked at the top of the crease. Amherst was fighting to comeback and making plays in the Trinity zone as the period ended, including a Salerno drive off the stickside post, but the Lord Jeffs were not connecting. The Bantams play deserves a lot of credit for that; they were physical and getting into Amherst's hands, not giving them space to create and effectively screening off shooting lanes. Play during the 2nd was back and forth. Amherst fianlly broke through when Lloyd fired a shot on net from just inside the blueline; Fisher dug the rebound to Doyen low at the bottom of the right circle and she got the puck to the top of the crease where Vitale nailed it home. The score held at 2-1 deep into the 3rd. The Lord Jeffs evened the score at 2 on a powerplay goal. Salmon worked the puck off the right wing half boards back to Salerno; her drive was tipped from the top of the crease by Flom and was in to Pujol's stickside. The Bantams were not fading away quietly and stunned the crowd with a powerplay goal of their own. Sword fed Bauer who got into the Amherst zone and with an open look from right point beat Russell with a rocket up stickside. The Lord Jeffs did get the extra atacker on for :50 but were unable to get the puck to the net and force OT.
Rematch this afternoon at 3.
So, is it time to make reservations at the Middlebury Inn for 3/3? It looks that way. Middlebury finishes regular season NESCAC play this afternoon hosting Williams and a Panther win puts them at 14-2. The Lord Jeffs need to beat Trinity and then would need 2 wins in Watson next weekend to finish 14-2. Amherst must hope for Hamilton to get hot and win out to get to 8-8, combined with Trinity losing 3 straight (Amherst and a home and home with the upstart Wesleyan Cardinals) to finish 7-9. The NESCAC tie breaker goes to record against the 3rd palce conference finisher, which in this scenario is Hamilton; Amherst is 2-0 against Hamilton, while the Continentals beat Middlebury.
Lots of hockey left, so get out and watch those seniors one more time!

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

Senior Day at Orr yesterday afternoon. Happy to report all the parents got on and off the ice for flowers and pictures without anyone landing on the ice! Seemed there were less former players in attendance than the Midd series a couple of weeks back. Hard to get your head around the idea that 4 years have slipped by so quickly. This class (Babineau, Clegg, Fisher, Murphy, Swiontowski and Vitale) were 1st years for Amherst's initial NCAA title, helped win a second as sophmores and have been a solid part of a now well established tradition of excellence. Needless to say, there were some emotions and adrenaline flowing for the 1st period and the Lord Jeffs came out flying, controlling play, outshooting Trinity 12-3 to take a 2-0 lead after one. Lloyd opened the scoring with a powerplay goal. Fisher was grinding down low in the left wing corner, got the puck to Swiontowski on the half boards and she fed Lloyd who was set up on the point just inside the blueline. Lloyd's drive was low and appeared to caroom off a D skate (although she had Clegg tied up at the top of the crease) and the sudden change of direction saw the puck beat Pujol. Amherst extended the lead converting a 2x1. Vitale fed ahead out of center ice to McInnis breaking into the offensive zone on right wing. McInnis slipped the puck to McBride in the high slot and despite a D impeeding her efforts with a hook she was able to beat Pujol up just under the crossbar for what proved the game winner. Trinity rallied and played things much closer for the next two periods. A fine effort by Edelson drew the Bantams within one. Edelson's forecheck caused a turnover inside the blueline and although checked she forced her way in to the bottom of the right circle and beat Murphy with a backhand up gloveside. That ended the scoring for the afternoon. Both goalies were on their game. Amherst had a couple of powerplays in the 3rd, but were unable to get the puck to the front of the net and get Pujol moving. Trinity's three back defensive triangle provides strong net presence in support of a good goalie and while the Lord Jeffs were able to move the puck on the perimeter it is difficult to score from behind the net and along the half boards.
So where does this leave us as we head into the final weekend of conference play? Typically little has been decided. Middlebury has completed NESCAC play at 14-2 and it may be time to make those reservations. Amherst can tie the Panthers at 14-2 with two wins at Watson next weekend, but must then see a vaguely unlikely combination of results to win a tie breaker with Midd. The Lord Jeffs need those two wins over the Polar Bears and for Hamilton to sweep Colby up in Waterville and Wesleyan to beat Trinity twice in their season ending home and home series. Thinking about all the combinations gets confusing, but the salient facts are Trinity swept Hamilton and Bowdoin swept Trinity and Middlebury and Amherst split, while the Panthers lost to Hamilton and the Lord Jeffs to Trinity. Wesleyan and Colby are still neck and neck for the 8th spot (the Cardinals home and home with Trinity and the White Mules hosting Hamilton). There is even a chance for Wesleyan to tie Williams or Conn with five wins, but it is impossible to sort out the tie breakers until the weeeknds results are in. The Polar Bears have a lock on third place and certainly have the potential to give Amherst trouble at Watson. The Panthers get to sit back and watch, but have a trip to Norwich on Tuesday and host Plattsburgh on Saturday, with both games having great impact on seedings come NCAA time.

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

didn't get a chance to catch either game between the Mules/Cards this past weekend--obviously this weekend's results will be the deciding factor for who gets to clinch the 8th seed. key players to look out for on both the Wes/Trin and Hamilton/Colby rosters?

Not to state anything too obvious, nor wanting to put pressure on particular players, I have to believe both series come down to goal play.
Hamilton is a more potent offense than Colby. Zimmerman (16-7-23) has scored almost half as many goals as the entire White Mule squad (36). The Hamilton powerplay clicks at .154, while Colby scores at a mere .087. The Continental's Hazlett was solid against Midd and RIT, but Colby's Wheeler has a better saves %. I am thinking Colby salvages a point here.
Trinity played very well against Amherst last weekend. I have to think their D and Pujol in net (.931 saves %) will be able to shut down the Cardinal offense. The Bantam powerplay is effective at .158, while Wesleyan scores at .102 and Trinity penalty kill is a solid 10/90, with the Cardinals at 18/96. Corvi will have to be sharp for Wesleyan to prevent a Bantam sweep.

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

Assistant coaches for the World Championships have been announced.

http://www.usahockey.com/Template_Usahockey.aspx?NAV=TU_02_03&id=315032

Interesting to see that Coach Halldorson, who won 3 D1 championships at Minnesota, coached for 7 years at Colby, compiling a record of 59-75-9 while there, if my math is correct.

Anyone know if she built the program up while she was there (I don't see records anywhere going back that far), or if this is an illustration of the differences between coaching at a NESCAC school vs. a large, public D1 program?

(I'm assuming that her success at Colby must have been a factor in her being hired at MN .... )

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

Congratulations to all the seniors (and their parents...hope you get on and off the ice successfully)!!!

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

So here we are, the final day of the regular season. Don't know if we are anyplace I didn't expect to be when it all started back before Thansgiving; Midd and Amherst battled most of the way for hosting rights and, while I expected Bowdoin and Conn to round out the top four, it has proven to be the Polar Bears and Trinity with home games for the quarter-finals.
Spirited contest at Watson last evening. Bowdoin got on the board first when their top line cashed in a 2x1 break; MacNeil got the puck to Holtz and she fed Tess-Wanat on left wing as they crossed the blue line. The lone D had Holtz covered and Tess-Wanat patiently walked in on Murphy and picked the top gloveside corner with a forehand wrister. The Lord Jeffs evened the score just as they came off a powerplay when Vitale made a nice play on right point to keep the puck in zone. Salmon and Clegg fought on the half boards, the puck was fed to Flom, she had space and beat Connolly up gloveside from the right circle. Play was pretty back and forth for most of the 1st until the Lord Jeffs scored twice as the period wound down. The Amherst forecheck produced a goal with Salerno working down low and Fisher getting the goal digging the puck under and in. Fisher scored again minutes later when a Martin blast from the right point sailed wide of the net, Swiontowski took the puck off the boars and got it to the stickside post where Fisher got it in under Connolly. The Polar Bears were coming on in the 2nd, peppering Murphy in the Amherst net, particularly after a powerplay around 15 minutes, but Murphy was hot and making the saves. Amherst extended their lead to three midway in the 3rd when Clegg, playing center field against Bowdoin's floating Tess-Wanat in center ice, intercepted a long pass and carried from the red line into the high slot; Connolly made the save, but the rebound to the left was rammed home by Doyen. Merrill made a nice effort to bring the Polar Bears within two, stealing the puck in neutral ice and breaking in alone and getting off a bachand from the slot beating Murphy up gloveside. Bowdoin pulled Connolly for the extra attacker just under 2 minutes but was unable to ramp up too much pressure on net. Vitale nailed an empty netter from the half boards in front of the Bowdoin bench making it a 5-2 final. There was a rare for NESCAC skirmish just as time ran out when a Polar Bear took a run at Doyen on the half boards and received a 5 minute major and game misconduct. Hopefully tempers will have cooled and Senior Day will proceed peacefully!
Again, congratulations to all the seiors everywhere, and thanks for the energy and passion you have brought to the ice these four years as the epitome of the NCAA scholar athlete!!!

Coach Halldorson's record at Colby can be a little misleading, in that at the time she was there, they played in a league with mostly D-I opponents. There may have been some flux in terms of membership, but the figures for 1995-96 say the league (ECAC) had 10 D-I members out of the 12 teams in the league, and Colby went 12-9-1.

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

Believe it or not, it was Colby 6 to 1 over Hamilton today. With Wesleyan's loss to Trinity, that means Colby gets the 8th NESCAC playoff spot over Wesleyan, and earns the six-hour-plus bus ride to Middlebury next week. Win or loss meant nothing to Hamilton for their #5 playoff seeding. Kayla Lessard stood on her head to hold Amherst to a 2-2 tie against Bowdoin -- something like 37 saves.

I had meant to post some comments on the Amherst@Bowdoin tie, but the Editor's laptop mouse and I have an ongoing, exceedingly disfunctional relationship and the mouse ate my homework...
Basically, Bowdoin played an excellent 1st and led 2-0; Amherst then played possibly their best period of hockey this season and tied at 2-2 after the 2nd. The 3rd saw Lessard standing on her head in goal for the Polar Bears and things ended at 2-2.

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

Here we go! I am sure it is a bittersweet day for the 30+ NESCAC seniors, as they know this could be the last time they lace 'em up...
Upsets??? Hard to imagine Colby beating Middlebury. The White Mules did take the Panthers to OT the first game of the season, but my money is on Midd. Conn Colege played Amherst close in their two meetings in New London. The Lord Jeffs have struggled on their powerplay of late and scored 3 of their 5 goals against the Camels on the pp in winning 3-2 and 2-1. Time for the Lord Jeffs to play 60 minutes and not let lesser opponents get the idea they are in the game. My money is on Amherst. The Polar Bears host the Ephs in Watson for the third time this season. Both games were close until Bowdoin powered away in the 3rd. The Polar Bears need to start palying to their potential; they gave both Midd and Amherst a tussle regular season, but need to win a couple more games to really have much to show for it. I dream in Black and White, and the Polar Bears have a better team, but something makes me say I would not bet the ranch on this one. Hamilton at Trinity is a dice roll. I have not watched the Continentals since an early season loss to the Bantams. Trinity is as good as their goal play (so poor at Bowdoin, so good against Amherst?). I think Trinity wins, but would a Hamilton victory be an upset?
GOOD LUCK to all!!!
GO U BEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

This afternoon's 3-0 win by Amherst over Conn College in a NESCAC quarter-final featured both a virtuoso and solid team effort. Emily Flom, a 1st year at Amherst from Grosse Point Farms, Michigan, wowed the crowd with an outstanding rendition of the National Anthem; rich voice, hit the high notes, no hokey embelishments, just really nice. She was rewarded with an ovation for her effort. She then donned her helmet and made a significant contribution on the ice. It was obvious from the warm-ups that the Lord Jeffs would be without the services of All-American D Lloyd and they came out and played with passion from the opening faceoff. The problem was Conn 1st year keeper Fralick was standing on her head in net. She twice robbed point blank scoring chances from in close on an early Amherst powerplay, the second when Fisher took a fed from behind the net at Fralick's stickside post. Late in the period Clegg rushed into the slot only to have Fralick kick away her attempt. Conn had a great chance slip away with 1:30 left in the 1st when a shot slipped out of Lord Jeff goalie Murphy's grasp and landed on top of the cage. The 2nd opened with another Camel opportunity on a 2x1 in the first minute, but Murphy made two big saves to keep things locked at 0. Amherst broke through when Opperman got the puck to Flom on the left half boards; she worked out, anticipated the play and slid a perfect feed to Swiontowski coming off the Amherst bench; Swiontowski's drive from the top of the right circle beat Fralick stickside. The Lord Jeffs scored again when Swiontowski and Babineau worked the puck down low behind the net; Babineau got it out to Flom on the left boards and she had space, walked across the high slot, took her time and rifled a wrister up stickside of Fralick. Murphy kept her shutout early in the 3rd when she stoned Dumont on a deflection from the top of the crease on a Camel powerplay. Lord Jeff D was outstanding all day and in the 3rd allowed only 2 shots despite having to kill 2 penalties. Vitale added an insurance goal after she won a faceoff in the right circle; Baranek worked down low, got the puck to McInnis who fed Vitale in the slot for a quick wrist shot beating Fralick stickside. Real solid 60 minutes from the Lord Jeffs for the win. They now will face Bowdoin (3-2 OT winner over Williams) while Trinity (3-1 over Hamilton) will face host Middlebury (5-1 winner over Colby) in the NESCAC semi-finals.
Hope to see you all in Middlebury next weekend!
