Nescac 2011-2012

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

This afternoon's 3-0 win by Amherst over Conn College in a NESCAC quarter-final featured both a virtuoso and solid team effort. Emily Flom, a 1st year at Amherst from Grosse Point Farms, Michigan, wowed the crowd with an outstanding rendition of the National Anthem; rich voice, hit the high notes, no hokey embelishments, just really nice. She was rewarded with an ovation for her effort. She then donned her helmet and made a significant contribution on the ice. It was obvious from the warm-ups that the Lord Jeffs would be without the services of All-American D Lloyd and they came out and played with passion from the opening faceoff. The problem was Conn 1st year keeper Fralick was standing on her head in net. She twice robbed point blank scoring chances from in close on an early Amherst powerplay, the second when Fisher took a fed from behind the net at Fralick's stickside post. Late in the period Clegg rushed into the slot only to have Fralick kick away her attempt. Conn had a great chance slip away with 1:30 left in the 1st when a shot slipped out of Lord Jeff goalie Murphy's grasp and landed on top of the cage. The 2nd opened with another Camel opportunity on a 2x1 in the first minute, but Murphy made two big saves to keep things locked at 0. Amherst broke through when Opperman got the puck to Flom on the left half boards; she worked out, anticipated the play and slid a perfect feed to Swiontowski coming off the Amherst bench; Swiontowski's drive from the top of the right circle beat Fralick stickside. The Lord Jeffs scored again when Swiontowski and Babineau worked the puck down low behind the net; Babineau got it out to Flom on the left boards and she had space, walked across the high slot, took her time and rifled a wrister up stickside of Fralick. Murphy kept her shutout early in the 3rd when she stoned Dumont on a deflection from the top of the crease on a Camel powerplay. Lord Jeff D was outstanding all day and in the 3rd allowed only 2 shots despite having to kill 2 penalties. Vitale added an insurance goal after she won a faceoff in the right circle; Baranek worked down low, got the puck to McInnis who fed Vitale in the slot for a quick wrist shot beating Fralick stickside. Real solid 60 minutes from the Lord Jeffs for the win. They now will face Bowdoin (3-2 OT winner over Williams) while Trinity (3-1 over Hamilton) will face host Middlebury (5-1 winner over Colby) in the NESCAC semi-finals.
Hope to see you all in Middlebury next weekend!

Bear - You never elaborated on Lloyd. Flu, injusry, personal reasons?? Will she be playing this weekend, as she is a prominent player for Amherst.

"A" prominent player for Amherst? In my opinion she is NESCAC POTY.

Honestly, I was asked not to discuss this on the Forum (and I am not being coy, I really do not know what the story is). I am sure there is a lot of info out there in rumor-land...

Understood....I guess we will see what happens with her at Middlebury this weekend, if she plays or not.

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

So here we are back in Midd for the NESCAC finals. Supposed to get some snow overnight and then rain in the morning.
I have to pick Amherst over Bowdoin. Obviously, everyone wants to know if Lloyd will play. The Lord Jeffs played a solid team game beating Conn. The Polar Bears played one great period in the two Amherst games in Brunswick two weeks ago. They can play with the Lord Jeffs, I just don't know if they have the depth to beat them.
Coach Duggan has done an amazing job getting the Bantams to the NESCAC semi-final, but Pujol will need to pich a shutout for them to advance to the final. Middlebury found their powerplay against Colby in the quarter-final, but Midd goal play has not been sharp as the season wound down. I thinl the Panthers just have too much offense for the Bantams.
GOOD LUCK to all the players, coaches and parents!!!

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

1-1 after 1 at Kenyon...
No one has told the Bantams they are not in it to win it...
Pretty Midd goal with Melberg feeding Fluke on a 2x1 and Fluke getting the puck to Waters for the goal.
Trinity scored a more controversal goal on a powerplay with the puck and various players in the net, which was off the post, but after a conference at center it was ruled a goal. Appeared Jones made an initial save and then hard to say what happened other than Robinson scored; no assists given so far.

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

Midd up 2-1 after 2
Trinity outshooting Midd 18-16
Bourdeau scores for Midd on a dump and change shot from the blueline...Pujol goes down to a knee with her stick across the crease only to have the puck take a truly flukey bounce in gloveside.

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

Midd 4 Tri 1 final w ENG

Good live stream from Midd, with play by play from what sounds like students, but pretty good knowledge of the game.

The announcers said the Trinity goal was clearly in, and cleared from the goal by a Midd player before the scrum ensued .... hard to see from the video, though.

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

Salmon scores for Amh 28 seconds into the 2nd with a scary dangle & backhand. Amh 1 - Bow 0.

...and that's how period 2 ends. SOG: Amh 14 - Bow 10.

And it's final. 1-0. Lots of PK success for Amherst.

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

Amherst defeated Bowdoin this afternoon on a game that in many ways resembled their 2-2 tie in Brunswick two weeks ago. The problem for the Polar Bears was despite playing another strong 1st they were unable to cash in any of their opportunities and the 1st ended 0-0. The Lord Jeffs won the game in the opening seconds of the 2nd on a highlight reel effort by first year Salmon. Salmon took the faceoff to start the period, won the draw back to Lloyd, who got the puck Babineau in center ice; Salmon collected her pass and then worked her way from the blueline on her forehand through traffic to the high slot where she faked the remaining D with a shot and crossed to Lessard's gloveside for an elevated backhand which was in off the post for the only goal of the game. Quite the nail biter of a game for either side. Amherst was uncharacteristically whistled for more penalties than the Polar Bears, but their defense (particular kudos to the D played by the forwards on the kill) was able to keep the Polar Bears on the perimeter and away from the net. Bowdoin chose to employ a floating forward much of the game which neutralizes the offensive contribution of the opponent's D, as an Amherst D was required to play sort of center field in the neutral zone guarding against the long outlet pass; at the same time it makes it easier for your opponent to control the puck in your zone and that runs time off the clock. Theoretically that is only an advantage when playing a stronger team if you have the lead and time ran out with that one pretty goal as the only one the goal gods gave for the afternoon. Outstanding net play by both Lessard for the Polar Bears and Murphy (the best non all-conference goalie in the NESCAC, if not outright the best in the conference) for
the Lord Jeffs.
So tomorrow we have the Lord Jeffs and Panthers for the NESCAC auto bid. With no upsets in the other conferences so far (Gustavus winning the MIAC and River Falls winning the NCHA) it appears both Amherst and Middlebury get to advance to the NCAAs. The winner probably gets a home NCAA quarter-final, while lose and you may go on the road.

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

0-0 after 1 at Kenyon
Midd came out and had early territorial advantage and then got 2 powerplays. Amherst started skating the last 6 or 8 minutes of the period and their forecheck was giving Midd trouble breaking out. Goalies look sharp for both squads.

Agreed, OB, that was a pretty goal, even on the computer screen!!

Meanwhile, in the final game, after 1 at Kenyon, SOG: Midd 10 - Amh 3

Still no score at Kenyon after 2. SOG: Midd 14 - Amh 11.

No score yet, as Midd and Amh prepare for OT. Midd will start OT with a PP of 1:33, as what looked like a slash by a Midd player was not called, quickly followed by what looked like a questionable trip on an Amh player with time running down.

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

next goal wins at Kenyon
Midd with pressure late in the 3rd...Babineau with open look at Jones from slot shorthanded as time ran out; Jones with body save to keep it 0-0

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

Midd 1 - Amh 0, OT win after Amh kills yet another penalty, but gives up what looked like a rebound goal ...

Re: Nescac 2011-2012

Lloyd was not close to 100%. She played but was not much of a force on the ice. Flinched badly on one stick check that I saw. Kudos for playing hurt, but wasn't able to do much to help the Jeffs.
