Nescac 2009/2010

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

How about the Jumbos?! What a great start for Tufts this year. Who would have thought they would be ahead of Amherst heading into the break. DeRosa, Diaco and Walker are leading the way on the stat sheet, but the real star is Barchard! We'll see if they can keep it up.
Not sure, but the BeezleBubs are great! Should have won that show on NBC last night!

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

Did you see Jack O'Callahan talking about the 1980 Olympics with Bob Costas between the second and third periods of the Winter Classic along with Dave Silk and Jim Craig ? He was wearing a black hat with a white B on it. It wasn't a Bruins or Red Sox hat. It was a Bowdoin hat! Pretty cool!

Son Aaron plays for the Polar Bears.

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

To all you Tufts/SOG nay-sayers: did you notice the boxscore for the Jan 2nd game Trinity @ Plattsburgh? Plattsburgh won 9-0 and outshot Trinity 70-23. I guess the "impossible" 66 SOG's against Tufts makes this a drug induced fiction by the Plattsburgh stat keeper.

The impossible keeps happening. How can that be?

ps: Adrian had 74 SOG's @ Concordia (WI) on 12/4. Inconceivable!

I will say, I was at the Plattsburgh-Trinity game, and fwiw I thought that the vast majority, if not very nearly all of the shots were legitimately shots on goal. Some of us at the game were laughing about how ridiculous it was, but I have to say that Vesprini really impressed me... 50 saves in 2 periods, and 80 saves over 5 is nothing to shake a stick at.

Link for the video webcast of tonights' Curry/Bowdoin match at 7:00 PM:

I wasn't able to watch the video feed but have read the game report from SID James Caton. I was glad to learn Jeff Fanning got a hat trick against Curry in his first game since last winter. Jeff may not be a fast skater, but he gets himself into position and has an accurate, hard shot.

The game against Norwich on Friday will be the biggest test of the season so far for the Polar Bears. I'm driving up from Rhode Island and looking forward to what I hope will be an interesting game -- pending, of course, Bowdoin's unpredictable goaltending :) .

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

It will be a test, I will be curious to hear your account, I have seen Norwich play early in the year against Amherst, they are very fast and will give Bowdoin a tough time on the bigger rink. I have not seen Bowdoin play this year so I will be interested to see if they have added a little more speed and skill to their lineup. It's a tough draw no matter what but if they can stay close, it bodes well for them against what I think is a very strong team.

I would have to say the the PBears have a tall order in front of them...my only consolatation is in the fact that Norwich has had a VERY difficult time with their Maine road trips..it's anyones' game..let the puck drop:eek:

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

Correct but williams must play midd so you would think one of them is going to end up on the short end of the stick. Tufts has to be the surprise of the east.

Happy to oblige.

I'm staying at the same Freeport hotel where the Norwich team stayed last night (they've just left for Waterville), so at breakfast this morning I engaged a couple of the players and coaches in conversation about how impressed I was with te Cadets' play. Norwich is a skilled and physical team. They don't do a lot of fancy skating but play it tough at both ends of the ice. Last night they won most of the corner battles. Their penalty killing is superb. Their goaltending appeared average for division III, but they can probably win it all even without outstanding goaltending. Their play reminds me a lot of Cornell's, a team that I greatly admire, though I believe Norwich fans are, on the whole, much nicer and less arrogant.

For the most part Bowdoin's play was solid. Goaltender Richard Nerland had a good game, making numerous difficult saves. He positions himself and cuts angles very well. Unfortunately, as I have written before, for the past three/four years Bowdoin goaltenders have had a knack for giving up bad goals at crucial times. Last night, with the game tied at two and about one minute left in the second period, Nerland allowed a fairly weak shot by a Norwich player to trickle between his pads and into the net. Had he made the save, the teams would have most certainly gone into the locker room tied, which would have changed the complexion of the third period. Let me add, however, that Nerland played well in the third period and kept the Polar Bears in the game. Norwich's fourth goal came when Bowdoin was pressing with less than five minutes left in the third period. All in all, I'd say Nerland has really improved since last year. He's only a sophomore.

Bowdoin moved the puck well despite being under constant pressure by the stronger Norwich forecheckers. The penalty killing was good, but the power play needs improvement. I've always found the Polar Bears a bit impatient on offense. That was certainly the case last night. For instance, they could and should have adjusted their power play, possibly going more into an umbrella. The players who impressed me most were freshman Dan Weineger (he's the real thing and plays like a veteran, even though he didn't score last night), juniors Brendan Reich and Graham Sisson, and senior Leland Fidler. I exclude junior Owen Smith from this list only because he took a bad penalty when Bowdoin was pressing at the end of the game. Smith is a superb and evidently very dedicated athlete. Besides, it's great to see a kid make a rather seamless jump from a public high school (Brunswick) to a top NESCAC team. I was somewhat disappointed in the play of seniors Colin MacCormack, Ryan Blossom and Mike Corbelle, three players whom I've always liked a lot, particularly the first two. Maybe that "C" is weighing too heavily on MacCormack. Hopefully, he'll break out of his funk soon. The skills are obviously there. Corbelle made several defensive mistakes, including a glaring one that led to Norwich's first goal. He's a better player than that.

Bowdoin has a solid freshman class. In addition to Weineger, Rob Toczykowski, Tim McGarry and Rob MacGregor have the potential to become big players for the Polar Bears.

I agree in part with "neverplayed" that Bowdoin has a a couple of players who aren't fleet of foot, but I believe overall the team team has good speed. The main problem for the Polar Bears isn't speed, but defensive errors at the wrong time.

All in all the Polar Bears accounted themselves well against a team that in all likelihood will play for the national championship. Even though the better team won, it was a game that with a few breaks (and a bit more disicpline on Bowdoin's part) might have gone a different way. As a lover of college hockey, I was glad I had the opportunity to watch last night's contest.

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

Thanks for the great report, Euler. I saw enough of the game on-line last night to come away impressed with both teams but agree with your assessment of Bowdoin's lack of discipline on offense and tendency to give up weak goals at inopportune moments. Bowdoin's very close to being a very good team while Norwich looks like the real deal and, with a few right bounces, should be in the hunt for the national championship.

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

Should the Jumbos somehow continue their winning ways, small bump last night, could you ever imagine the NESCAC Championships being held in the Malden Formum......good grief

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

Bowdoin defeated St. Michael's 6-2 on Saturday afternoon (January 9) in a non-descript game. Bowdoin remains tied with Williams for first place in NESCAC though the Ephmen have a game in hand.

The highlight of the game was Colin MacCormack's two shorthanded goals in a span of less than two minutes, which tied a record set by Charlie Gaffney against Southern Maine in 1995.

Goaltender Chris Rossi was shaky at the start, allowing a goal on St. Michael's first shot, but settled down after that. Rossi stays far too deep in the crease, giving opposing players too much net to shoot at. This has always been his biggest flaw. But he's also capable of some spectacular saves, and indeed had a couple of those on shots from the slot.

Unfortunately superfreshman Dan Weiniger, the leading scorer for the Polar Bears, suffered a knee injury in the first period (only a few minutes after scoring a typical goal-scorer's goal), and watched the rest of the game on crutches.

Re: Nescac 2009/2010

Not to worry... The Jumbos have a much tougher schedule ahead of them than behind. I can see at least 6 games that they have a very slim chance of winning.

Hope it's not serious as, if it is, that will be very bad news for the Polar Bears . .
