NCHC 2018-2019 Season: Quest to put 4+ into Late March-April Dance

Re: NCHC 2018-2019 Season: Quest to put 4+ into Late March-April Dance

CC/WMU postponed.
Will be a Sat-Mon series now.
As of 10pm last night the Tigers still hadn't left Colorado Springs.

You know, I saw that game listed already on my Sunday CHN app and thought "weird, how do they already know game 3 is scheduled?"

Now I know why.

Re: NCHC 2018-2019 Season: Quest to put 4+ into Late March-April Dance

I love Kalamazoo and Lawson and like the Broncos but one less quality team in the field would be nice.

That being said... this WMU isn't built for an NCAA run. I'd say their ceiling would be one win in the tournament, they're not going to Buffalo.

One win in the tournament counts as a run for us based on historical performance.

WMU definitely has the talent, especially since it looks like Allison is finally coming on strong after his injury against you guys last year.

Re: NCHC 2018-2019 Season: Quest to put 4+ into Late March-April Dance

So only winner of WMU or CC can benefit from a tournament autobid now, UND is out. Just not so sure of their chances to do so...
Not sure if a DU winover UMD in in frozen faceoff could propel them to the last seed, but if UMD drops both games again I could see them dropping to a lower seed. Obviously I’m too lazy to use a PWR calculator. Dogs will be in it either way. I’d just rather them not have to face SCSU until frozen four is all I care seeds be ****ed

I don't think either WMU or CC can win two in a row against UMD and then SCSU (or the other way around).

In looking at the Pairwise Probability Matrix over at CHN, it looks like the only team who can indeed move up to a #1 seed is DU. And that would require DU to win the Frozen Faceoff and have UMD lose both of their games. One win by UMD secures the last #1 seed. Zero wins by UMD still probably keeps them at #4 as long as Mankato wins their game.

Be a lot easier to look at this after the CC/WMU game tonight. I think WMU will find a way to win tonight.

Re: NCHC 2018-2019 Season: Quest to put 4+ into Late March-April Dance

And while I'm ok with UND being out so as not to ruin keeping SCSU closest to home or forcing them to play at an extremely hostile arena even as the higher seed, I'm really not looking forward to the absence of UND fans this weekend. I know some will still go but it isn't going to be the same.

I am looking forward to the trip up to Fargo in a couple weeks. Something I don't think I've ever said in my entire lifetime.

Re: NCHC 2018-2019 Season: Quest to put 4+ into Late March-April Dance

Obviously the green horde of UND fans is what drives the attendance in St Paul. I am thinking that a lot of pre-sold ticket packages are from their fan base so at least some of them might still go and enjoy the weekend even without their team playing. Having Duluth and St Cloud there helps avoid a complete train wreck (I hope). I am going to say there will be 9,000 - 10,000 fans there each day (which is a session and how the tickets are sold).

Pre-sales were only for the lower bowl. I don't know the breakdown between bowls for seat count, but I just know that my wife and I will be skittering around to find the best seats we can after faceoff. We bought the $55 package.

Even if UMD does fall to #5, I can't see the committee putting the #1 and #5 in the same regional. You'd think they'd give the #1 seed the break they've earned by putting the #8, or at worst the #7 seed in Fargo with SCSU. I don't think the geographical argument can outweigh the bracket integrity argument.
But, it is the NCAA, so...

I really don’t care if we’re a #1 seed or not. To be the best you have to beat the best. And after how they shoved all MN teams together in the regional last year despite the FF also being in St Paul, all bets are off. I think a UMD-SCSU or Mankato matchup deserves to happen in the frozen four and not some regional. That’s my concern
I’d rather UMD lose in the regionals than semi finals after I’ve made the trip to Buffalo. Chicago was great fun regardless but I don’t recall ever thinking about making vacation plans to Buffalo

Re: NCHC 2018-2019 Season: Quest to put 4+ into Late March-April Dance

I think part of the reason they shoved Kato, St Cloud, and Duluth into the same regional last year in SF was because they could and they were worried about attendance. That building is significantly larger than most other sites for regionals and since UND didn't qualify, they were worried. I don't think that problem will surface in Fargo. Scheels Arena is smaller. Its looking like Mankato and Duluth will both be #1 seeds anyways so they literally can't be placed in Fargo with the Huskies. Even if Duluth drops a spot to #5, they won't end up in Fargo. I could see them putting Denver in Fargo, however.

I'd rather go to Buffalo than Chicago...

Wasn't the Sioux Falls sold out last year (actual ticket sales)? Obviously butts in seats not the same thing. So that's basically saying they are worried about secondary market sales? Bracket integrity is what they should worry about but I guess we know how much that matters to the NCAA. Regardless, UMD only needs just a single tie this weekend and they're locked into a #1 seed. As they should be.

Bring some work gloves. You'll be just in time to help with the sandbagging.

Re: NCHC 2018-2019 Season: Quest to put 4+ into Late March-April Dance

Will be real interesting to see the crowds this weekend. UND will have the most fans but how many will sit out?

The crowd favorite is gonna be CC, I know I'll be rooting for them against SCSU.

Maaaybe if SCSU rests their top lines (Ryan Poehling healthy?), and CC catches UMD sleeping since those teams don’t have much to play for... Tigers have had good success against DU recently but you know DU would love to end their season if they were to meet in the championship.
SCSU seems like a team that will pound the crap out of CC just for the hell of it. But if CC were able to pull it off, maaybe they could upset someone in the NCAA.
Check that. Their luck is running out

Re: NCHC 2018-2019 Season: Quest to put 4+ into Late March-April Dance

Although St Cloud went 3-0-1 vs CC in the regular season, CC actually led in all four of those games at the midway point of regulation. St Cloud ended up winning the "tie" in the 3 on 3 OT as well. All four games were also played on an Olympic size ice sheet, while this one will be on a smaller NHL sized rink.

Both teams play on an olympic sheet
