Today's BU-Cornell game ended up as the fourth longest DI Women's game. I don't see the old thread for longest games and as USCHO only lists the longest women's game I thought I'd repost my list. I believe it is accurate, but if I've missed a game please let me know so I can correct the list.

Several of the Cornell players had a hand in their two games ranked in the top 5. Rougeau was directly involved in the ending of both those games. In the championship game two years ago, she stepped out of the box, serving a penalty, but was just a hair too late getting back into the play, when UMD scored the OT winner. Today, she was the hero, scoring the winning goal.

Yeah, funny how that works isn't it? Had she taken the shortest distance between two points and skated in front of Gray instead of trying to skate around her to Gray's far side the outcome might have been different. A nanosecond was the difference.

Wow, lots of work, Sean. Minor point...the championship game that OnMAAA referred to above from 2010 ended in the 3rd OT period, not the 4th. Today's Cornell-BC game was extremely reminiscent but with a bit of a different flavour. Not sure which was more exciting if that's even possible to determine.

What is possible to determine is that it speaks volumes about Cornell... their having several players on both those teams.

She initially started toward her bench to change so that her team wouldn't have three D on the ice, and that is what cost her.

Today was likely more exciting for people who like goals. As in, a lot of goals. :eek:

Thanks, I noticed that and thought I had corrected it, but obviously not. It's corrected now, along with another error.

I started the list several years ago when the subject came up because of a number of long overtime games (I think it was 2007). In fact, since 2005 there have been multiple overtime games longer than 70 minutes every year:

Plus improvement in goaltending and team defense, as well as expansion of the postseason. The NCAA tournament has gone from three games to seven. In 2004, the WCHA had only one game and three byes for a quarterfinal round. Now it has expanded to best of three quarters, so that means 8-12 games instead of just one. Hockey East added two quarterfinal games along the way. More games means more chances to go OT.

Plus ECAC went to best of 3 in 2002.

This is amazing work. The only thing to note, is that the NCAA didn't officially recognize women's hockey until the 2001 season. So while the 1996 game remains the longest in women's hockey college history, it's not the longest in NCAA history. Either way though, this is outstanding work. So excited to finally see a legitimate list. Thank you!!

By 2007 I had become a Wisconsin women's hockey fan, and was avidly following the playoffs. But I was still living in suburban Los Angeles. So occasionally there'd be a game on satelite TV that I could watch in a bar, and sometimes there were video or audio streams of games on the internet. And sometimes not.

For the #3 game on the list, I was not able to find video or audio. So I "watched" that game by keeping one of those 'live stat' boxes open on my computer.

Five hours, give or take. And the longer it went, the more intently I stared at the screen. When it finally ended, no flashing lights, no 'goal horn'; just an update in the window - goal, Zaugg, Wisconsin.

Quite memorable, in its own way.

One of the games this year and #50 both involved Harvard, bringing the number of games they have played in to 14. That is an astonishing 28% of the top 50 games. Dartmouth and Providence are second with 6 games each.
